First time visiting Wild Mountain, a small northern Minnesota ski hill. Wild traditionally opens early for 2020, October 20th. I went up on Oct. 31, a rope tow and one chair with two runs were open. It’s early season but I still got to ski in October for the first time. Temps were warm so it was like spring season in the fall. May have to make a return trip this winter when the whole hill is open. Summer would be a fun visit as well. Mountain coaster, water slide etc.

Yes it is Midwest skiing, but for a 70 year old guy, Wild Mountain gives me everything I need.: well groomed slopes, no wait for the lift (Friday), knowledgeable staff, quality and reasonably priced food. A 30 minute drive from home is a big plus ! I recommend 1/2 price Wednesday if your schedule allows. A $23 lift ticket is hard to beat.

Just a little bit about my skiing background: I ski at Welch with a group of friends a few times a year. We also make an annual weekend trip to Lutsen. I've skied at Afton a few times and once in awhile I'll head out West. With that background in mind I was looking for a place to ski with the family for something to do Christmas Eve day. Welch was only open until 2:00 pm. Wild Mountain was open until 3:00 pm. Both Welch and Wild Mountain are about an hour drive from us and I didn't want to drag our teenagers out of bed early to have a decent amount of time on the slopes so I decided against Welch. The other ski area I strongly considered was Afton. It's only about 40 minutes from us but I was worried it would be really busy given that it's a bit closer to the metro area. I hadn't skied at Wild Mountain before, they offered discount tickets for Christmas Eve & since was my son's birthday, he could ski for free. So Wild Mountain was over $100 cheaper. Decision made. ;) And it turned out to be a good decision. It wasn't busy at all. I don't know if they typically aren't busy on Christmas Eve or if the unusually warm weather this last week had people worried about the snow conditions. In any case the wait at the lifts was extremely short if we had to wait at all. In terms of the actual skiing, there was a decent variety of runs and I liked the terrain parks (though I'm not really a terrain park guy). I would say they were better than Welch, but I only do rollers and jumps, - and I cheat on the jumps. :) Snow conditions were surprisingly good considering the week of 40+ degree weather we had. Overall, Afton and Welch are probably better skiing if crowds aren't a factor. They have more vertical and a larger area to work with. The lodge/chalet at Wild Mountain isn't modern or upscale but is fairly large and has an old time look to it that I liked. Food was decent. The lifts are also pretty old, not fast, but get the job done. With the light crowds, they were just fine. The staff was friendly and helpful. We all had a great time. There's a very good chance we'll make this an annual tradition. They are also open Christmas day from noon to 8:00 pm which might even be better.
