Our whole trip to Vietnam was based on my husband wanting to do this drive and it did not disappoint. We used style motorbikes (highly recommend) and traveled from hue to hoi an. We had our trip mapped out starting at an Bang cemetery and along the coast to Lap an lagoon, lang beach viewpoint and used viewpoints on Google maps from then finishing off at marble mountains. The drive is gorgeous but motorbike driving experience is recommended as you do go through some busy places before the start of the pass and unfortunately we did see an accident between a bike and a truck.

Amazing views on the drive around the hai van pass and spectacular views from the designated look out point by the brick tower but, be very careful here. Our guide told us to buy something from the woman who owns the toilet if you use her facilities. I bought a snack for 30000 Vietnam dong. As I was looking for cash in my wallet, she grabbed a 500000 dong note and said that was 50000 then gave me change for 50000. She did the same thing to someone else in our group. She is a very bad person so avoid her toilet and use the one further down the road.

When it comes to train travel I believe I've done my far share: Trans Mongolian, Tibet, around Europe etc...seen some sights as far as train travel goes. As for the Hai Van Pass this is one of those 'look out of the carriage window' in awe moment. What better way to arrive in Danang after a night on a sleeper train this this sight...

We embarked on the hai van pass expecting a relaxing journey when it wasn’t really that. We hired one motorbike between 2 of us and got our hostel to send our bags. The roads from Hoi An - Da Nang are fine but through Da Nang it got very busy and you need to have some road motorbike experience. The pass itself had some beautiful views, if somewhat short (I think only 20km) with limited food options (perhaps some closures due to covid?).
We weren’t sure where the ‘viewpoints’ were and wish we planned our stops before starting so plan your route and stops before.
After the Hai Van Pass, if you are heading all the way to Hue you must be warned - the rest of the 70km is a Highway road (feels like a motorway). It is VERY busy and you need to have high concentration for about 2 hours. We also hit this road at rush hour so plan your journey so that you set off early to miss this !!
We would recommend doing the Hai Van pass - it is worth it and waterfall stops along the way are beautiful (Suoi Mo waterfall). But do your research, set off early and be prepared:).

Disappointment. The road itself is ok and there are some truly nice views. But after riding couple of days and hundreds of kilometers in the beautiful and empty, amazing mountain roads of Ho Chi Minh trail closer to the Laos border, Hai Van Pass felt really crowded and not impressing. Especially the highest point where people have used to take cool photos, was stuffed with people and was a true tourist trap. If you are looking for nice roads to motorbike, consider QL14/15 (Prao - Khe Sanh - Phong Nha) instead, which is a bomb over this short and crowded one.

On our way from Hue to Hoi An, the tour group I was with made a rest stop here. Great views, including that of beaches and the city of Da Nang. It was a bit cold and windy here, so a hot cup of Vietnamese coffee hit the spot.

I really enjoyed trip from Hue to Hai Van pass and back on motorbike. It took me almost entire day but it was worth it. Road is curvy and not in bad shape and the views from top was astonishing.

What a day this was for us. We had seen them do it on Topgear, on there mopeds. We were in a nice tour car, with our guide. We stopped for Oysters with peanuts, before the long climb. We stopped a few times to take photos, as there are many places you can pull over. It is so high you are in cloud whe you are at your highest point.

Hai Van pass is a must see place. Entire road looks amazing with lots of viewpoints. Better to explore it by motorbike, but stay away from tracks and crazy busses

Hired a scooter in Hoi An and really enjoyed the cruise. The road is a little bumpy and narrow. Trucks and buses tend to drift into your lane, so keep your wits about you. The views are great. Can be a little cool, pack a jacket.
Be smart and you’ll have a great ride.

risky business. hire cars are reasonable and safer
Hi, I am currently in Hoi an and wanted to rent a scooter tomorrow to do the hai van pass to hue. However, I am not sure whether it is possible and or worthwhile with the current weather? I think it will be as rainy tomorrow as today. Does anyone have more information and whether the pass is still worthwhile with heavy rains?

Hi,
I’m staying in Hoi An and want to do a loop of some of the Hai Van Pass on a motorbike. Ideally, we’ll set off early morning, and be back mid-late afternoon. I’m only in Hoi An for the weekend (live in Hanoi) and have a friend visiting, so want to tale him.
Any particular routes you’d recommend, or sites to visit along the way/way back?
Many thanks in advance

Hi,
We were staying in Hoi An and set off from there to do the Hai Van Pass. We left late morning and got back early evening, probably around 8 hours. We went via Marble Mountain so maybe an hour or two there. From there through Da Nang and over the Dragon Bridge toward the Pass. We drove over the Pass stopping a couple of times for photo opportunities. On the far side, stopped at a little roadside cafe for a bite to eat and a cool drink. Pretty much the same on the way back to Hoi An. Round trip is easily done in 6 hours with some stops and without having to push it.

Best company to book a Jeep tour of the Hai Van Pass from Hoi An to Hue? I've been looking at Vietnam Backpacker Hostels tour but are there any others people recommend? Do I need to book in advance or could we find one while we're there?

If you are staying in Hoi An you find plenty of tour companies that can satisfy your needs. You can look on Trip Advisor and /or Danang / Hoi An Expats facebook page.

Hi,
Planning on going to Vietnam next year and our wonderful travel agent based in Vietnam has arranged a private car through Hai Van Pass. I understand this drive takes 4 hours.. random question (probably stupid), but are there bathroom facilities along the pass?

Yes there are bathroom facilities, but make sure you have your own paper (tissues are fine) and hand sanitiser. If you've travelled through Asia before you'll know this is a fairly standard requirement.

Hi. I’m heading to Vietnam in March with my sister and we’re thinking about hiring a car with driver/taxi to Travel the Hai van pass to Hue. Is it recommended? Also any tips on who we book a car/taxi with and how much it is? Any answers greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

You can book through VM Travels and you don’t even have to pay in advance. Yes it is recommended to take the car either from Hue to Hoi An or vice versa. You can mail your date of travel with pickup time via their website. I booked it and had a good experience. They charged me 59$ for a private car. The driver was English speaking and we stopped at A beach and marble mountain in between.

I would like to rent a car and drive by myself (not rent a car with a driver). Does anyone know if/where I can do that?
Motorbike is not an option since I can't drive one and it seems like a bus/train is not an option if you want to enjoy the hai van pass, or what do you think?
