The Landing is a great place to visit in December when the houses are open and decorated for the period and season. We started years ago by taking oldest grandson and as the younger ones got old enough (4 years old) they joined us. One year we said we weren’t going to go back that year and the kids protested saying they loved going there and they learned something new every year, which is what we hoped they would say. People in period costumes are in each house and they explain what is is like to live on the German farm, for example, In 1910. You walk along a road and go into the 20 or so historic houses. I think we usually spent 3 -3 1/2 hours there, asked a lot of questions and take a horse drawn trolly ride back to the entrance. This visit is always the first weekend In December and we continue to return. Dress warm and for the outdoor walk. The houses are heated as they would’ve been during the period they represent... most are cool inside but not cold.

We had great family time! We had ages 4-61 together for the day. The costumed interpreters were well informed. They were cooking and showing holiday crafts to the guests. The best interpreters gave information about the house and traditions, but kept it limited so that the kids didn't get bored. The kids loved getting involved in helping to creating holiday crafts. One of the biggest hits were the school house and the outdooe sleds.

It's been a few years since we've been there but definitely worth the stop if you like to look into MN's past, especially more rural MN. My father actually attended a one room schoolhouse so it was good to see it and imagine what his early years of school were like. Not as well known as Old World Wisconsin but somewhat comparable.

We went to Murphy's Landing today for their Maple Sugar tour. They had a horse drawn Carriage ride to the maple sugar site. Afterwards, they had several houses open and people teaching us how life was in their time period. We took our four kids ranging from 6-12.......they ALL loved it! I highly recommend going. We will be back in the summer, but even before then.......worth your while!!!
