Absolutely fun place. Catch the Trolley up, go on a $3 tour of the place, and get free samples of all 7-8 different types of beer. Tour guide was great, the amount they do to help the community is unreal.

The Schell Brewery is the 2nd oldest family-run brewery in America. Located in a beautiful setting on the southern end of the charming town of New Ulm, MN. They have tours on the hour (check their website for exact times). The short tour is about 30 minutes followed by beer tasting where you get to sample 6 different brews. Take... More

I took 3 granddaughters here and they were excited about the deer, goldfish, and especially the peacock! There was one negative: a little bridge over a pond was unsafe and the pond was fetid and stinky. The flowers were beautiful and the girls complimented the 2 groundskeepers.

Every brewery tour that I have been on, I have seen actual beer being made. This brewery tour is not great. You don't see beer being made and you really only go into two buildings. It's very informative, but kind of boring. The tasting at the end is great though! You get a total of 24 ounces of beer in... More

We went to the first tour of the weekday - 1:00, $3.00 per person , it was not sold out on Tuesday- but it looked close so get there early. A very knowledgeable man gave us the tour, if you are impaired in your ambulation this tour isn't for you- but you could still do the beer tasting. I learned... More

Heather - Thank you for the review. We are glad you enjoyed your tour! In regards to our gardens, we were hit by hail several weeks ago, and are still struggling in a couple areas. Also, the variety we do have has to be resistant to the many deer and peacocks that wander through the gardens when we aren't looking!... More

Though it was a 2 hour drive from Minneapolis, it was worth the drive, to see and tour the second oldest family owned brewery in America. The grounds and gardens are enjoyable to walk around while waiting for your tour. On weekends the outdoor Beer Garten is open weather permitting. Get there early to go on tours since they limit... This is the 2nd time my husband & I visited this brewery. We so enjoy the brewery tour! The guide is great- he knew his stuff. This visit was a Saturday and this time we were able to have beer & Cheese/bread basket at the Bier Garten. THAT was fun- the course bread & cheese was great, and helped fill... More

Most of the reviews you read are spot on. Beautiful grounds, historic brewery, etc. I've taken the tour a few times and always pick up a new tidbit. The tour is not a 'how to make beer tour' like say, New Belgian brewery as an example. I envision that The Schell's brewery is just not set up to walk you... More

Thanks for the review, Drivetour. Yes, you are correct, in that our brewery was not built at a time when tours were allowed to go through production areas. We have added windows into areas so people can safely see equipment, but other areas are just not set up to allow visitors to walk through the plant. We do have a... More

Our tour guide Dale was great! The tour told us both history and current use of the brewery. We were able to sample 5 types of brews and then get one final 12 oz beer to drink. Beer was great and peacocks were great addition .

I used to go there as a kid to fish the Cottonwood River, and just recently visited again but this time recognized the beauty of it. There is a lot of History here, in that it is the only place spared by the Indians in the Uprising of 1862 as August Schell treated the Sioux in the area fairly. The... More
