Homestead Tour
Aug 2019
Thoroughly recommend Savernake Homestead Tour, Anne was a wealth of knowledge. The history of the property and Sloane family connections was very informative, would like to return for other tours offered on this property.

Tour of Savernake Station
Mar 2019
We were greeted at the main entrance to the station by Mrs Ann Sloane alongside the green letterbox. From there we followed Ann in her car to the Homestead. The Homestead is a large building which was added to over the years. Ann was our guide and she is very passionate about the place and was a wealth of knowledge. In particular it was interesting to hear about one of the main occupants of the Homestead Mrs Jean Sloane. She was an English lady who married an Australian grazier and moved in around 1899.

We then ventured onto the Woolshed, which is still operational. It was interesting to see the different modes of energy sources over the different eras. Starting with a steam engine, then a diesel engine and then an electric motor. These sources drove a main shaft. The present shearing machines have their own electrical outlets. We also saw the adjacent living quarters for the shearers.

Finally we visited the Selectors Hut. The lady of the house would have done it tough in her day. However there were signs of a woman's touch around the place.

So worthwhile 2.5 hours very well spent

A wonderful tour to learn about Australia’s history from descendents of the original Sloane family who settled in Savernake area The records and photographs kept by this family from the mid 1800’s is remarkable. The DVDs and the books give a living time line over a period of approximately 170 years. The Sloanes were before their time in protecting flora and fauna.

Extremely interesting tour full of many personal facts about the past

This is a very interesting tour with an interesting way of being costed. You pay by the hour for a personal tour so theoretically could spend as long as you wanted if you wanted to pay for it. If we had the money I think we could have spent much longer than 2 hours listening to all of the fascinating stories Ann had to share. Its a great homestead & for us the first time we had seen a real boomerang & spear. If you are interested in the history of our country & how it developed then this tour is a must.

That's exactly what we hope to display - turning back time, and understanding the lifestyle of Australia's pioneers. Thank you.

Remarkable natural and human history - this place is important!
May 2017 • Friends
Before arriving I had some little knowledge of Savernake Station from a family member who is my friend. But the property exceeded all expectations in important ways. A desire to understand and respect the natural environment has been a hallmark of this family since arriving in the mid 19th century, and, as well as the family's history and artifacts, this has resulted in the preservation of ecosystems and indigenous human history that is now exceedingly rare, and of immeasurable value. The quality and breadth of the family's history is staggering and - for me - powerfully intriguing. The cottage accommodation was lovely and also of considerable historic interest, yet very comfortable and well set-up with all modern conveniences. Ann and Alex are terrific hosts, knowledgeable yet still keen to learn all they can, and informative custodians of this remarkable legacy.

An Inspiration
Apr 2017 • Friends
A friend and I visited Savernake Station and were warmly welcomed by Ann and Alexander. Their passion to conserve both the family and local history is to be commended. Our tour of the homestead provided an amazing insight into life in the area in the late 1800's, early 1900's and the present day running of this heritage listed property. Their ongoing commitment to this project is an inspiration to anyone wishing to pursue the importance of everything family.

Insight into our pioneering families
Mar 2017 • Friends
Our group of 4 adults spent 2 days at Savernake. The 1912 cottage that we stayed in was a trip back into the past, however it was comfortable and exceeded all our needs.
The silence at night and the expansive stars overhead were wonderful.
The guided tour of the Homestead by Ann and Alexander was a trip into the past and a highlight of the visit. Ann's knowledge is expansive and she has wonderful family stories to share that bring the house to life. The homestead is a priceless time capsule that reveals the lives of 5 generations of this rural family who have resided in the house. You must not rush this tour and allow at least an hour and a half!!!
The tour would be a great learning experience for all ages.
Savernake would be a wonderful destination to take overseas tourists who want the "Real Aussie" experience. It doesn't get any more genuine than Savernake!!
A day is not enough, spend the night!!!

Amazing time capsule.

If you have a particular interest in Australian history and culture, a booked tour of Savernake Station is a must if you are ever in the Mulwala area. The home was built by the original leaseholders and has remained in the family ever since, which is why there is such a great collection of furnishings, household utensils and tools and personal items on show. It also explains the passion of this generation of owners, who revel in exploring the history of their family and sharing it with visitors. They are still discovering artefacts and archives stored up in the roof space, so I'm seriously considering a return visit at some time.

Great History experience of an early homestead
Apr 2016 • Couples
We enjoyed taking part in the conversation and hearing the family history. We were able to relate much of what we saw to our own family history since settlement in the "Colonies". The production of the books and DVD are valuable sources for future generations as well as today. The huge collection of artifacts and documents would equal any seen in our land and it is so good to see them being preserved and shared with others. It is wonderful that Ann and Alex Sloane take the time and energy to educate old and young about the conditions of life in a remote area such as this.
A wonderful experience not to be missed. Ken said "it was enthralling"
