About
First Avenue is celebrated as one of the longest-running, independently owned and operated venues in the United States. First Avenue is dedicated to promoting artistic expression in diverse voices old and new, to provide a community by offering artists a stage and a mic, and fans a place to gather. First Avenue owns and operates The Depot Tavern, the 7th St Entry, the Turf Club, the Fine Line, The Fitzgerald Theater, the First Avenue Mainroom, and co-operates the Palace Theatre. As the musical epicenter of the Twin Cities, First Avenue—and by extension, the venues it owns and operates—opens its doors to all music lovers who are First Avenue’s past, present, and future.

Closed now, temporarily, due to COVID, but the outside wall is still visible, painted with names of lots of the artists/acts who have played here in the past, from Prince (of course) to Nirvana to Dr John to White Zombie to The Ohio Players and tons more. A lot of history on display with more to come.

We had a great experience here for the Wailers in August 2021. It was such a neat thing to hear the people of Minneapolis sing “Don’t worry about a thing” after a year of political upheaval following the death of George Floyd, 18 months of a pandemic and economic/housing crises because of the pandemic. It felt very inclusive and special. Clearly caters to all types of cultures, gender identities and sexualities at this venue. Very clean, even the bathrooms, and lots of opportunities to purchase some very good beer. The one thing I would like to see is more cross-promotions with Paisley Park and highlights of the great artists like Prince who played here.

First Avenue is a historic dump club. It's filthy inside with no seating. The staff is rude and military. It is violent and unsafe. After a very brief stay we exited the building and heard gunfire very nearby.

Went to a concert at the 7th street entry. Pretty sweet spot to see a band, super small but in an awesome way. They had a small bar and stage but an overall sweet spot to see a band you like.

Best venue to see live music. Park at Mayo Clinic Square underground and you only have to run across the street if you go in the winter. Just went to G Love and it was a great show.

My wife and I saw Stereolab here on October 5, 2019 - I had always wanted to see Stereolab live, and I had always wanted to see a live show at First Avenue. I was in Minneapolis on business in 1984 when Prince, The Replacements, etc. were huge, and I missed it all. We live in between the KC metro area and Lawrence, KS, and while we have some great clubs in KC and Lawrence like The Uptown, The Midland, The Bottleneck, Liberty Hall, etc., First Avenue blows them all out of the water! First Avenue was the best small club I have ever seen a show at, and to make it even sweeter, it was Stereolab! Worth the road trip for this alone, and then we also saw a show at The Guthrie Theater, went to the Walker Art Center, visited Surly Brewery, etc., but I could do another separate post on how great the Twin Cities are!

I went to Minneapolis for a Facebook group meet n greet and we as a small group wondered over to see the legendary First Ave. We took pictures of each other by the famous ones star's that are painted on the exterior walls...It was fascinating and impressive seeing the collection of artist names there....Parliament, Nine Inch Nails, 311, Black Eye Peas, Kool and the Gang, The Time, Pearl Jam, Tracy Chapman, and of course PRINCE with his now Gold Star!!!! I cried! It was so emotional being in the place that was so much a part of my youth Purple Rain History right here!!! The manager gave our small group a private tour the were setting up for a show that night, so it was empty. we had it all to ourselves he walked us through giving us a history lesson it was wonderfully emotional. We took a picture in front of Purple Rain Star that’s upstairs! Dream come true...RIP Prince forever in my Life!!!!

Being on a Prince memory lane we visited his home first and of course First Avenue. It is must see as it belongs to his earlier career and was a prominent location in his Purple Rain movie. His 'star' now has a golden colour. So earned.

We flew to Minneapolis to catch our favorite band in this excellent, historic, small venue and we were totally stoked! Fantastic place to see a show. And it got us to Minneapolis, which turns out to be an awesome little city I plan to return to again and again...

This is a neat place with some pretty cool people. The top floor is for 21 and over and the bottom is obviously under 21. Get there early so you can find the best place to stand (there is no seating unless you have VIP or upgraded ticket). Lots of hotels and parking garages around. Highly recommended getting a hotel if you can, as its a fun place to have a little to drink (drinks are expensive, but they come in 24oz cans).
