About
THE GUTHRIE THEATER is an American center for theater performance, production, education and professional training, known for its dynamic productions of classic and contemporary plays. Open to the public year-round, this award-winning cultural destination houses three theaters, dramatic public spaces and distinctive dining. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, the Guthrie is located in the historic Mill District of Downtown Minneapolis and features a 175-foot cantilever bridge which overlooks the Mississippi River. When it opened in 2006 Time magazine called the building "a 21st century dream factory." Visit the Guthrie to see a show, grab a cup of coffee and explore the building, shop at the Guthrie Store, or to simply take in the extraordinary riverfront views. Backstage tours are Friday and Saturday mornings.

A Local Gem
Nov 2019
This place is an absolute gem. It is known as one of the best regional theaters in the country. The space is great, good design and leads to a wonderful experience. We enjoyed a perfect performance here. The locals are lucky to have this institution.

Extraordinary Theatre thrust deep into the Mississippi
Jul 2019
Situated on the traditional land of the Dakota Peoples, the Guthrie Theatre is one of the world's great spaces for the Arts. It has been a while since my sister Gina and I travelled to the US and to Minneapolis and we were looking for Mary Tyler Moore nostalgia. What we hadn't expected was the beauty of the Guthrie Theatre, thrusting boldly into the banks of the Mississippi River. Seated in a bold space, we witnessed a magnificent production of 'Frankenstein - Playing with Fire', Barbara Field's reshaping of Mary Shelley's masterpiece. When you travel overseas, it's exciting to witness such novel theatre in the magnificent space that is the Guthrie.

Guaranteed entertaining date night
Mar 2020 • Couples
We are so lucky to have this venue right here in our proverbial back yard. Although I may harbor a personal preference for the Old Globe in San Diego, this place is giving it a run for their money. In 3 years of attending performances here, my wife and I can only recall one disappointing staging from the Guthrie Company, with all of the rest exceeding our expectations. With a little research, you can pair a show with any of a dozen exemplary and distinctive dining experiences around the downtown that just may transform your Minneapolis visit into a memory you and yours will recall for years to come. Go ahead, take the plunge. There isn't a bad seat in the house!

Great plays, gorgeous setting
Feb 2020
A friend and I have season tickets. We saw Noura a few weeks ago and Twelfth Night last week. Both times we met an hour or so before the show for drinks in the bar at Sea Change on the first floor. It's a comfortable place to relax and enjoy a good selection of wines by the glass.

If you're a visitor to the Twin Cities, be sure to go up to the fourth floor to enjoy the view of the Stone Arch Bridge and the I-35W bridge across the Mississippi. If you have time, go out on the Endless Bridge for an even better view.

My friend and I both loved Noura. It's about an Iraqi immigrant family struggling with PTSD along with the normal difficulties of making a life in a new country. The set was almost another character in the play. It all takes place in the family's New York apartment. The walls are made of U-Haul boxes, and behind them are T-walls--a reminder of why they left Iraq.

There are several stages at the Guthrie, but all give you an intimate experience. Usually when I've gone, most of the seat were filled, so if you want to go be sure to order your tickets in advance.

Endless Bridge
Aug 2019
We visited this theatre not to see a show, but to instead enjoy the views of the Mississippi from the Endless Bridge viewing platform. It's a good viewing spot with terraced seating from which to enjoy the panorama across the river, St Anthony's Falls and the surrounding old flour mills. It is of course, neither endless (how could it be), nor indeed a bridge, but the effect is still impressive and it was nice to sit out here as the sun began to set, with a load of theatre-goers milling around us, taking in what must be one of the best views in the city.

Noura by Heather Raffo
Jan 2020
This play was one of the best I have ever seen. It is so contemporary in it's story and the only thing that rivals the language of the play is the delivery. The performances by all are very good, but the performances by Gamze Ceylan and Fajer Kaisi are outstanding. We were so shell-shocked at the abrupt ending that we sat in our seats just soaking in and puzzling out the experience. Do yourself a favor and go see Noura.

No to Noura
Jan 2020
Saw the play Noura last Saturday. Might have been one of the worst presentations we have ever been to. The set was ridiculous, the script was horrendous and the acting was atrocious. We left after 45 minutes of torture. We were ready to leave about 10 minutes in but were hoping it might get better but no such luck.

We're sorry to hear NOURA didn't meet your expectations. We hope you'll join us for another performance in the future.

High quality theater
Nov 2019 • Friends
The Guthrie has a longstanding history in the Twin Cities. This iconic, modern building is a neat experience in and of itself to see inside and view the Stone Arch bridge from the building bridge at the back of the Guthrie. It is very handicapped accessible. My only recommendation for improvement would be more space between seats in the theater for both legs and girth, have a connected skyway to the parking ramp (the architecture teases you that it exists) and a better handicapped drop off area on the street. The plays that I have seen there are ALWAYS of the highest quality and service is amazing as well. I highly recommend the Guthrie.

For theater, dining, river views
Nov 2019
Not only is the Guthrie a world-class theater destination, featuring new and classic plays, musicals and performance, it is also a must-visit destination for Minneapolis tourists for a superb river view from its Jean Nouvel designed building. There is also an excellent fine dining restaurant (Sea Change) on the ground floor and light meal/bar facilities upstairs. Advance tickets are a good idea, available from the box office or online.
