About
THE GUTHRIE THEATER is an American center for theater performance, production, education and professional training, known for its dynamic productions of classic and contemporary plays. Open to the public year-round, this award-winning cultural destination houses three theaters, dramatic public spaces and distinctive dining. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, the Guthrie is located in the historic Mill District of Downtown Minneapolis and features a 175-foot cantilever bridge which overlooks the Mississippi River. When it opened in 2006 Time magazine called the building "a 21st century dream factory." Visit the Guthrie to see a show, grab a cup of coffee and explore the building, shop at the Guthrie Store, or to simply take in the extraordinary riverfront views. Backstage tours are Friday and Saturday mornings.

We are so lucky to have this venue right here in our proverbial back yard. Although I may harbor a personal preference for the Old Globe in San Diego, this place is giving it a run for their money. In 3 years of attending performances here, my wife and I can only recall one disappointing staging from the Guthrie Company, with all of the rest exceeding our expectations. With a little research, you can pair a show with any of a dozen exemplary and distinctive dining experiences around the downtown that just may transform your Minneapolis visit into a memory you and yours will recall for years to come. Go ahead, take the plunge. There isn't a bad seat in the house!

Recently traveling to Minneapolis we stumbled onto this amazing theatre and were fortunate enough that there was a performance that night. We watched “ The Importance of Being Earnest” which was fantastic. The staff were friendly and the facility itself is amazing! The facility is designed well to get people to the correct area and has comfortable seating. It has several special areas for viewing the Minneapolis city skyline, views of the Mississippi and the city from the amber glass room are worth price of admission alone.

Seeing a play at the Guthrie theater especially on the Wurtele Thrust stage is pretty special. Performances are consistently of the highest quality, there isn’t a bad seat in the house, and prices are not indecent like some venues in town. The recent production of Hamlet was fabulous. At intermission, make sure to go outside and watch a bit of the sunset over the Mississippi River, St Anthony Falls and the Stone Arch Bridge which is pretty magical. My only gripe at this last visit was the limited concessions. They removed the bar from near the outdoor area and it would be extremely helpful if they allowed preordering of drinks for intermission so that you can enjoy the 20 minutes.

This was open for self-guided tours on the day of a farmer’s market outside in the Mill Museum plaza. The theater is very big and an impressive architectural feat, covering two theaters, on upper floors, production support areas and more importantly for the tourist, a cantilevered area over the river allowing good views of the old bridge, falls and mills. There are tours on some days, but not currently.

2022 production of A Christmas Carol did not make the mark. Scrooge, Marley, and the three ghosts were upstaged by singing and dancing Londoners. Marley, a part that demands a big, burly, deep throated male, was played by a woman (what was that about?) They all did a nice job with what they had to work with but the production fell short. Added to the disappointing performance, Guthrie has the most uncomfortable seats you could find for a theater. I don't think we'll be back for quite sometime.

I have not watched any show here. We walked in just to take a peak at the interior. A gentleman/usher (there was on ongoing show) suggested we go up to check out the viewing area/overlook (free entry). It does offer a nice view overlooking the River, Bridge and Falls. There also is a room with a glass floor and yellow-tinted windows.

Attending a play at the Guthrie is an experience! This elegant facility is located on the bank of the Mississippi in the Minneapolis Mill District. They attract some of the finest theatrical works and performers from all over the country. A trip to the Twin Cities should include taking in a performance at the Guthrie if at all possible.

I've probably seen half a dozen performances at the Guthrie and each one has been fantastic. This most recent was "Into the Woods." And if I was going to be back in Minneapolis in time, I'd absolutely see "For the People" as well (Oct 7-Nov 12) - incredibly innovative theater being created! The building is stunning and the views are some of the best in the city.

A Christmas Carol. A timeless production was changed for the 2021 production. The actors worked very hard but the changes took away from the classic. The ghost of Christmas present needs to be in Green... and the ghost of Christmas future lacked alot!!!
Stop trying to change a classic!

This place is an absolute gem. It is known as one of the best regional theaters in the country. The space is great, good design and leads to a wonderful experience. We enjoyed a perfect performance here. The locals are lucky to have this institution.

Hello,
I am a frequent patron of the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis and have been to a number of the productions there. Most recently West Side Story and Guys and Dolls. Neither those two plays or others in recent visits have I seen the name of the actress you mention. Perhaps asking at this forum is not the proper place to ask, as most people here are the Trip Advisor reviewers, not the staff of the Guthrie. Your best option is to go online to the Guthrie Theater website and ask your question there. Or you could call them. Best of Luck.

I am trying to be budget-conscious re tickets at McGuire Proscenium. I am considering seats along the wall on both sides on floor level and in the two outside sections of Balcony 1. Are they reasonably good seats? Thanks for your help.

There really are no bad seats. Most recently, my wife and I were in row K on the aisle and it was perfect seating. Buy the tickets you can most afford so that you are not bothered by it when watching the play.
Enjoy!

What is the distance to the Guthrie? What time should we dine at Maxwell's in order to make a 7:30 pm performance?

Having dined before many Guthrie performances at many venues, I'd recommend 5pm reservations (even at the restaurants IN the Guthrie) - it's a very pleasant venue were you to arrive early, including an outdoor balcony w views of the river. Also an interesting gift shop.
