Years ago, in some fancypants culinary periodical, I saw an image of a tamale wrapped in a banana leaf. It became a sort of grail for me until I found La Loma's Oaxaqueno- pulled chicken in red chili sauce wrapped in a rustic crust of rough hewn masa, then folded into a banana leaf slick with fat. With a cup... More

I love this place! Mercado Central is a cultural wonderland with shops and grocers and restaurants. The Milanese Torta at Manny's rocked my little world and Taqueria La Hacienda has a location here. From tamales to fish tacos and al pastor, everyone's favorites make an appearance. What a happy place this is, particularly on Cinco de Mayo.

All the reviews made me think this was a lively market place with music and people selling wares. In my head I thought it would be more market style. We found it to be a building with small shops specializing in Mexican items. I will say the food was very authentic but we were not wowed like others.

I love this place. They serve Al Pastor pork tacos that are worth the 30 minute drive every time I find myself craving them. I really recommend this place, the culture is wonderful, the people are kind, the food is delicious. They even humor me when I do my best to speak spanish with them. Check it out!

I was so glad to discover this great place last year! The order-at-counter restaurants and stores are all together in this wonderful indoor market. It's fun to bring the kids during the homeschool day for a little cultural experience. We love to try new foods together and practice our Spanish a bit.

The mercado was much smaller than I'd expected, but still had much to offer. Shoppers can buy books, crafts, jewelry, and even spices. There are also several food booths. The mercado is located within their Mexican district, which is home to a strip of good restaurants and shops. The people are all very friendly. I recommend also stopping in one... More

I would like to say that there is a nice atmospher at Mercado Central, very family oriented. What I order when I go to the Central Market is 2 Tamales de Pollo en salsa verde (chicken tamales in a green sauce) at the cafe and 2 tacos alpastor (marinated pork tacos) and agua fresca horchata (a tasty rice beveerage) at... Mercado Central has a great variety of food, clothing, services and authentic Mexican gifts. I love the different foods, people watch and desserts I am able to find. It is like a little Mercado straight from Mexico. It is worth a visit for lunch or just snacking, the kids will also enjoy it! :-)

Hola, My life and I went to Mercado Central after reading a rave review or their tamales. Delicious, inexpensive tamales are very hard to find here or in Arizona. So we arrived at the Mercado Central Lake Street address and expected to find just a nice little restaurant. What an eye-popper! We entered the west-most entrance on Lake street and... More
