- 7r4ve11er26 contributionsA world class art museum, in fact one of the best I've ever been to. I went there for 10 hours over three days and I still didn't get to see the bulk of the Chinese art or the 19th-20th century Western art. I especially enjoyed the temporary exhibition on Korean art since 1989 (the Shape of Time). Most objects were labelled in detail and the curation was outstanding.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten June 8, 2024
- Matt NMinneapolis, Minnesota4 contributionsThe third floor at the Minneapolis Institute of Art is what I picked to explore on a rainy afternoon, and let me tell you, I barely scratched the surface of what this place has to offer. This is just one floor—there are so many more waiting for another day, but what a floor it was! One moment, I was transported to the bohemian glow of the Moulin Rouge, the next I found myself in a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed living room, followed by an intimate English parlor straight out of the 17th century. It’s like stepping into a series of magical portals, each more enchanting than the last. There was a fabulous photography exhibit and a private collection of portraits that felt like a peek into someone’s art-filled attic. And the masterpieces? Just casual encounters with Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and a staggering number of Impressionist gems that could leave any art lover weak in the knees. The best part? It’s FREE. Yep, zero dollars for world-class art that feeds your soul. With so many other floors and treasures waiting to be explored, MIA is the perfect rainy-day escape... and a reason to keep coming back again and again.Visited November 2024Traveled with friendsWritten November 21, 2024
- Rainbow Crown3 contributionsI'm a huge art fan and was absolutely shocked at how cavernous this museum was. I gave myself 4 hours and was still running around at the end since I didn't have time for the entire Asian wing. Also, I appreciate how chill the staff is. They do their jobs, but don't have power complexes (as someone who takes photos of the artwork for scrapbooking, I hate having two eyes burning in the back of my head even though I'm not doing anything wrong). So would definitely recommend at least half a day here. Free + nice staff + incredible art collection.Visited August 2024Traveled soloWritten September 21, 2024
- Snarth526 contributionsHaving heard nothing about this museum before wandering in during a first trip to Minneapolis, we were surprised and delighted by the quality and variety of the art, beautifully organized and displayed. This lovely museum is right up there with the best. Don't miss it, and allow more time than you think you'll want!Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 3, 2024
- Ted SSan Rafael, California124 contributionsIn the last 12 months, I’ve visited the Deyoung in San Francisco, the Chicago Art institute, plus the Wallace collection and British museum in London. I have to say the Minneapolis Art Institute is fully on the level of those legendary museums. It’s vast and with an incredibly diverse collection. The Asian art is absolutely on a level with the British museum. Truly one of the most spectacular exhibitions of Asian textiles and crafts on earth. The curation is thoughtful and the written plaques are intelligent and very informative. An absolute treat in Minneapolis.Visited June 2024Traveled on businessWritten June 25, 2024
- Travel80Tyler, Texas525 contributionsWe really enjoyed our 2 1/2 hours visit to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Many classic works of Art on display throughout the museum. There were several highlights and one of the works we enjoyed seeing the most was Raffaelo Monti’s marble carving of the “Veiled Lady” (c. 1860). Highly recommend visiting the MIA when visiting Minneapolis.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 28, 2024
- jeanpascal181Nancy, France133 contributionsAmazing! The reviews read so far spoke of a “friendly” museum, “quick to visit”: I stayed there 3:30 and came out regrettably! The Asian collection is fantastic!! Besides that, there is “everything” indeed: this is what makes it an extraordinary museum. The diversity of forms, times, and cultures made my head turn! It was an incredible meeting! Thank you MIA 🙏🙏🙏Visited July 2024Traveled on businessWritten July 28, 2024
- Tony V.Phoenix, Arizona24 contributionsWent to MIA with a friend and was fully expecting to pay to $20-$40 entry cost that everywhere usually charges. To my surprise it was completely free! On top of that I had a water with me that needed to be in a bag and they gave me a free MIA bag as well. Incredibly hospitable with a wide array of diverse and impactful art. I came here on a whim and I am so glad that I did.Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 13, 2024
- dustythoughtsManchester, Connecticut2,292 contributionsThis gorgeous art museum was the perfect activity to get away from my conference: a beautiful museum of beautiful art. I loved the Tibetan Buddhist Shrine Room, the exhibit on storytelling in Chinese painting, and the Dark Visions exhibit, although everyone was fantastic. Friendly staff and very well-organized museum, with clear directions on how to find each exhibit.Visited October 2024Traveled soloWritten October 29, 2024
- Edward D424 contributionsI shouldn't have been surprised but I was. A striking collection. Only had about an hour and a half available, which was not enough time. Kind of rushed through the third floor and did a bit on the second floor. Some of the arrangements of paintings is very stimulating and original.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 27, 2024

We spent several hours at this museum, and I feel like we barely scratched the surface. There was one complete hallway on the 3rd floor that I completely skipped due to not having enough time.
I had no idea how big this museum is. In retrospect, we maybe should have concentrated on just one floor, and saved the other floor for a different visit.
In addition to paintings and sculptures, there’s also a big collection of glassware, some furniture, and even a few reconstructed rooms (such as a typical Japanese house, a music room in a manor house, a colonial room, etc.).
There are some paintings by big name artists: Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet.
Surprisingly, this museum is completely free unless you want to buy a ticket to a special exhibit.

Our first visit since Cornavirus-19 restrictions. Delighted to see that MIA is open . Currently visiting limited to Thursday through Sunday, with reservations required to control the number of visitors. As always, museum (other than special exhibits) is free to all. I have been visiting the MIA for nearly 60 years, but realized today how much I have missed over time. My wife and I spent two hours and did not cover even one floor. The range of European, Asian, and American art is outstanding.
Highly recommend for an enriching, pleasant afternoon. Both the gift shop and cafe are open.

I was not prepared for the vastness of the collection under that roof, considering it is practically free, if you don't take into account the fact that it is hard to have such an amazing experience and not leave a "donation" when you are exiting the building. Anyway, the quality and quantity of the collection far outweighs common donation amounts. A typical entry fee they would charge at any other similar establishment, (aside from the Smithsonians in Washington D.C.) would be much more than what people typically would donate. The variety of art media in the collection was also very impressive and had a good time range, considering the museum is free. If it was not free, well, then a bit more of time range would be expected in some sections. All in all, if you have any affection for art, you can spend 2-3 hours easily immersed in the experience once you walk in the front door.

I live in a city with a world class art museum and have been to The Louvre and Metropolitan Art Museum in NYC, so I was pleasantly surprised at how great this museum was to visit. I try to visit a museum each time I take a vacation, so I wanted to check out this museum while I was in Minneapolis. There are many nice exhibits in the museum. Parking was also very easy to find, and the employee at the museum were very friendly. There is a little coffee shop, where you can buy a coffee drink, and have a little snack. They also have a nice gift shop. I would definitely add this museum on your list of places to visit if you are in Minneapolis.

Wonderful art museum. Something to treasure as a resident of the Twin Cities especially as it is free admission. Art on display from all over the world both from the old masters and from modern artists. The period rooms on display are unique and are one of my favorite aspects of the museum. We attended the very popular Art in Bloom weekend in early May. It was interesting but beware that the place is mobbed for this event and really took away from the usual enjoyment of visiting the museum. Nearly impossible to find a parking spot anywhere in the neighborhood that afternoon.

Thursday mornings are reserved for older visitors and those who may be most at risk from covid. Admission is still free but an appointment must be made for visiting. The collections are extensive and the displays are well done. The store and the lower level cafe are open.

I was so impressed by the Minneapolis Institute of Art, both by the quality of the art and the fact that it's free. I visited on a Thursday to take advantage of the evening hours (open until 9:00 pm) and spent three hours. By the end of the evening, I had yet to see all of even a single floor!
I explored the third level, which is primarily European and American art. I especially enjoyed the Frank Lloyd Wright hallway and all of the German and Scandinavian art, which I rarely see at art museums.
There is a reasonably priced paid parking lot across the street from MIA.
I'll leave you with this question. There are a number of excellent free art museums in cities across the Midwest: Minneapolis, Omaha, Kansas City, St. Louis, Cleveland... So why, pray tell, is the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston $27 a ticket?? I miss living in the Midwest.

There is a gated parking garage for the museum which was free for my visit. Admission to the museum is also free (there is a donation box with a suggested donation of $10 which I think is reasonable for this exceptional museum). The museum is on 3 floors (the first floor is primarily admission, dining, and the gift shop) and has dozens of galleries including paintings and sculptures from the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa. There is modern art and classical art. I cannot think of an art museum I have visited that is any better than this one.

MIA is a World-Class Art Museum that compares well with most we have seen in Europe. And we lived there for many years and saw many of them multiple times in France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway and England. The variety, the types of art and the size of the museum with special exhibitions brought from Europe and other places is just mine boggling. There are also family days with art projects and other activities. It's a don't miss if you like art.

Loved this museum. We spent maybe 3-3.5 hours here-not even realizing it. Really great exhibits. The museum is free, but it costs to park(if you park in their lot). Totally worth it. If we lived here, we'd be here all the time. I wish we had more time. There are 2 paid exhibits to see, which we didn't do, but would if we lived here. We highly recommend this museum!

What would be the best exhibits for 5 yr. old boy and 7 yr. old girl?
Written June 26, 2018
Just come and explore. On our weekday visit in late May, we saw 6-8 yellow school buses parked outside and a lot of students of all ages roaming around the whole place. The teachers and guides took them everywhere. Since the museum was so spacious and had many many collections, everyone would feel welcome and could find quiet corners.
Just come and explore as a family. There are things for everyone of all ages, artistic tastes and experience levels.

I just bought a metal goat attached to a wooden base. On the bottom of it a label says that it was an authentic replica of an original from your institute. Can you tell me anything about the original piece? I bought it at an antique mall in Kent, Ohio.
I payed $12.50 for it. I love goat related items as I raised goats for many years.

New to the cities...live in Woodbury. Using public transportation, how would I get to the MIA?
Thank you for your prompt reply.
Written August 24, 2016
Sorry, not sure how to quickly get there from Woodbury. If you get to downtown Mpls you can take the Nicollet Avenue bus and get off on 24th and head a few blocks east.
Written September 4, 2016
how to get there by light rail from mall of america
Written August 14, 2015
You can take the blue line to the warehouse distict (downtown minneapolis) and catch a bus from there or take the 5 from the mall of america. The google maps app has a great public transit option (the bus picture) that I use to get around Minneapolis by publuc transportation all the time
Even bettet, if you enlarge the map, you can see exactly where the bus/train stop is or just ask someone. Minnesotans are pretty friendly and helpful. We tend to like to chit chat about the weather :)
