A little frustrating

Although I'm solo on this trip, it looked like people were having a fun time. There aren't a bunch of distracting TVs and the music isn't too loud. The service is good--casual and cooperative. But the portions seem inconsistent. I ordered a bowl of chili; it was quite small and I was still hungry by the end of it. I ordered a half-portion of nachos, and this is really what I should have gone for in the first place. It was piled almost as high with things as the plate was wide. I ate a quarter of it...maybe less. I feel greasy.

Great Bar Food Selection

We stopped here for lunch when biking around downtown Mpls. None of us had been here before, including our local relatives. We were pleasantly surprised by the extensive menu of bar food including deep fried Mac & Cheese, coney dogs, and otherState Fair type items - all we're quite good. The service was very friendly and efficient.

friend of mine, Matt Mauch, was having a reading of his new poetry book If You're Lucky Is a Theory of Mine at The Loft Literary Center, so a dinner stop at Grumpy's for a few worry-free pints to relax into before a night of poetry. I've only been to Grumpy's a few times because I find it hard getting past Town Hall down the street, which was too far to walk tonight and I didn't want to re-park. As it turns out, Grumpy's was convenient enough that it turned into a good sized party of poets and friends.

Started the night with Indeed's Midnight Ryder, which was well served, very clean and fresh. Switched to Surly Furious for a hop bite, but it wasn't 100% in the glass. Not bad and not sure why, but not what Furious can be. Afterwards, Al found Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree on tap, so that finished the night on a high note.

For dinner, I ordered the fish sandwich with house made tartar sauce and onion rings substituted for chips and a pickle. The rings were over-hyped on the menu with the fish sandwich being better than average but rather plain. The house tater tots that I bummed off of Matt's huge half order were much better and will be my choice next time. The chili crock ordered by one of our party looked delicious, so the vegan version may be my entree on a return visit.

Overall, Grumpy's a great stop when nearby, especially for The Loft or the Guthrie, and time is of the essence. A small but better than average line up of taps that will definitely have something worth drink, though it might not be new or overly edgy. I even have a fair amount of confidence is their beer handling. Plus, our server tonight was amazing. Tab said her name was Tif Dynamite and she was fast, efficient and extremely professional, including getting separate checks for each of us at our three tables pushed together. Since many of my reasons for going to Grumpy's involve limited time, the service makes it a low anxiety dinner and a pint to start an evening in downtown.

Try the Roseville location
I've never actually been to the one on Washington, but I love the one in Roseville. If you're looking to stay out of downtown and not worry about parking, this is a great place to go for happy hour, either from 3-6 or 9-11. They have a gorgeous, shaded patio that always has plenty of open seating and I personally always get a great server. If it gets a little colder, there is still a large bar area inside as well as a game room. There is karoake on Tues and Sat night and I believe they set out free pizza on Sat as well (possibly other nights but I'm usually too busy enjoying the patio to notice). The facilities are always clean. It's not a dive bar like its Washington location, it's in a large building with banquet rooms and has a restuarant attached. But if you like the dive setting, this place has the fun, friendly service and great prices that usually go with that, without having to feel like you can't touch a single surface in the whole place. I would recommend the Roseville location. I am a dedicated regular and hopefully that won't have to change!

i get it but i dont......
grumpy's on washington ave is my only experience with this company. The place doesnt smell clean. I am not seeking a cool club or high end bar, i am a pub kind of person. the place still smells bad. just.....not clean or like mold and sweat combined. let me repeat my previous sentence, i drink at pubs, taverns, and dives. i do not enjoy the smell of this bar. I have been there maybe five or six times in the last 8 months. they are one of only a select few who are open late on sundays so at random times it becomes the only option. the bartenders are civil at most. expect to pay full price for everything you order, even if you are in a group or are sitting alone all night long, you will pay every penny. I do not expect bartenders to just buy lots drinks for me or my friends and i, but if i go to a low end, dirty bar, i hope that they atleast buy a round or two if i spend more than $30 bucks per person with me. The service is slow. the bartenders know the people there and will sit and talk to them while you wait for drinks. realistic wait time for drinks on a not slow but not busy night.....11 minutes. on more than three occasions i have said to myself that i would not go back purely based on the bartenders but minneapolis is dead on sundays and if that ends up being the night you want to go out and you agree with me that "the local" is overpriced for slow and uncomfortable service then, by all means, go to grumpy's, the only thing i can that i enjoy about this bar is that it is a bar and does in fact, serve alcohol. period.
