Hit the famous stalls for sure. But don't miss out on some of the others that you didn't read about online. There's a ton of incredible food here. Go, eat your fill, head over to the Kek Lok Si temple for an hour or two, and then come back and eat more.

A trip to air itam will not be complete without having the now very famous air itam assam laksa. I still feel its still good although its not as good as previously. The mackerel meat is less and the prawn paste is a tinge more sweeter. Wash it down with a glass of pure sugarcane drink. Heaven!
There is also another asam laksa stall on the opposite side of the street which is run by a nice mute uncle. Its also quite good and for those who prefer your assam laksa to be abit sourish, you would most likely prefer his.
Also do not waste your chance to partronise some of the shops and hawkers that sells daily provisions. For those who wants some premixed curry paste, check out the stall along the row of shop houses. However be early as they close before noon. Also try the roti kok (dried roti / bread) which is fantastic if dipped into a cup of piping hot hainanese kopi o.
If you venture slightly further, you will find the famed sisters curry laksa and a stall that sells quite an awesome char siew (roast pork).

This wet market is located a stone's throw from Kek Lok Si Temple. The asam laksa across the road from the market is ever popular with long queues. There is a stall selling nice curry laksa in the food court within the market.

This is the most famous Asam laksa noodle in Penang. The stall has been operating for few decades. The recipe is different with others I have tried. But look although it's the most famous stall but I'm sorry to say that it is not the best I've tried in malaysia. Of course the food is eatable and also some claim that if you haven't tried this KEK LOK SI area Asam laksa, than you can't say that you have visited Penang. Lol. But any way it is a must try when you are in Penang. But ready for the queue as it will be very busy during weekends, school holiday and malaysia public holidays.

If you are planning to visit Penang Hill or Kek Lok Si Temple outside of George Town, you will pass through the area known as Ayer Itam which is very near to both of these popular attractions.
Sprawling along Jalan Basar Road within separate covered market buildings is the Ayer Itam Market, which seems to cover several blocks worth of buildings. If taking a public bus to the area, just look for the large brown roadside sign 'Pasar Awam Ayer Itam'.
We enjoyed walking around parts of the Ayer Itam market, looking over the fruits, vegetables, sundries and other goods being sold in the open stalls. It is a photogenic market with what seemed like good quality produce, worthy of purchase for those staying in Penang for longer accommodations with kitchens or cooking facilities.
Tip: For those planning on planning on sightseeing in the area, we'd suggest going to Penang Hill first, arriving early so you can avoid the queue at the railway tram going up the hill. Visit as long as you like. Then return and take one of the buses which stops in Ayer Itam (5-6 minutes by bus).
Exit the bus, walk around the market for 20-30 minutes before walking up to Kek Lok Si Temple, 300 metres away (at least according to the sign). This is a nice way to enjoy this very busy and colourful public market in Penang in between your primary sightseeing efforts on the day.

Although we didn't particularly like the Assam Laksa and Cendol, they were refreshing to eat on a hot day since they were sour and cold respectively. This market is located within walking distance of Kek Lok Si Temple and is therefore easy to access and worth visiting for some local street food. Along the way, there are also shops selling hats, clothes, and souvenirs.

Come here to try authentic Penang food! Cheap and tasty. The Penang laksa was very good and was only RM 5. On a hot day, try ordering the cendol. The only downside is that there are limited seats and the place is quite dirty.. Given how popular this place is, this place should be well maintained and hygienic.

Laksa in the market. The one and only, smells good and taste good too! The only issue is parking, there's no parking and limited seats.
