It’s free so silly not to take a look
Nov 2021
It’s free and great to see a bit of history - not that there is a o lot to see - can’t really complain

Adventure and fantasy.

Lots of climbing and children's fantasies begin. Who lived there? Look at this little hole, can I get through it?

Historical day out
Aug 2021 • Friends
Great place to visit for all ages and free to enter the grounds. Parking is on the streets around the castle. Plenty of grass area to have a picnic and there are noticeboards explaining the castle's history. Quite a small castle but there is also a lovely walk beyond which takes you between the golf course and there are some benches where you can admire the view. Worth a visit and can't believe I've never been before, as I'm Harrogate born and bred.

Disappointing
Aug 2021
I wouldn’t bother it’s just a few walls in a field, with no onsite parking, no cafe, no staff and one information board

Lovely spot to visit and/or picnic
Jul 2021
Spofforth Castle is one of my favourite kind of "hidden gems". It is not remotely on the tourist trail, but it is a historical structure which would hold pride of place in towns. But, surrounded by a rich and deep history in Yorkshire, it remains largely overlooked.

But it is a beautiful old fortified manor house, sitting in the middle of a park in Spofforth. Lots of parking nearby, and a beautiful grassy stretch in front of it for kids to play in or picnic in. There is no entrance fee or anything like than (it is not staffed) and you can wander freely around the ruins at your leisure.

You will almost certainly be one of the only people there. Well worth popping in for a visit if you are visiting the area.

Quiet. Relaxing. A welcome haven. Unmanned and not a lot to see but what there is is very interesting. Stop off if you are passing but don't make a special visit. English Heritage.

An interesting ruin
May 2021
We were visiting Spofforth so stopped to explore the ruined castle. There were informative information boards and it was interesting though a little muddy underfoot in places due to the recent rain. You can stand in and visualise the great hall. It would not be suitable for anyone with mobility problems being hilly and with steps. You can see an old viaduct also. It was an interesting half hour visit.

Free Attraction
Dec 2020
Nice little attraction which is free . Easy to walk around with the dog and some nice surrounding walks. Interesting architecture and history, where allegedly Magna Carta was conceived. Don't expect Warwick Castle, it's just a small ruin but that's reflected in the entry price - my favourite.

Small but nice ruin
Nov 2020
lovely little free English Heritage site. This is an old manor house in the village of Spofforth. You only need about 15 mins for your visit but it is still interesting, with information boards dotted around the site. Nice ruins to look at and partly built into the side of a rock face. Parking is available on the road side.

Ruins of hall - free visit managed by English Heritage
Aug 2020 • Solo
This hall is built into the rockside of a bank and uses the rock as one of its walls. There are a lot of nice vantage points if you look up and down. It’s free to visit and in a little green area of the village. Parking is in front of the green. I spent about 15 min, looking around and reading the boards
