Wonderful Time On A September 2021 BWCAW Trip
Sep 2021
A good friend and I booked a trip using Piragis as our outfitter for a September 20-24, 2021 BWCAW trip (66 miles and 25 lakes). From the planning phase right until the end, Piragis was top-notch. All the employees were helpful and wanted to ensure we had a great trip. We had Piragis supply the canoe, complete outfitting package, all permits, and the guide. Piragis was very meticulous in the preparation us our camping supplies, food, and canoe. They didn't miss anything. The camping equipment is high-end, and all of it (including the sleeping bags and camp pillows) are all washed after every trip. Piragis also contracted one of their trusted guides (David Hicks) for us. We did this as it was our first BWCA trip, and we wanted someone with experience to guide us on our first trip and provide us with a sense of security in case things went south. David was great. He taught us many skills (like map navigation, fire starting tricks, techniques for portaging a canoe, campsite set-up, etc.) that we can now use on later trips in the BWCAW and at home. The only downside of Piragis is their shop is an outdoorsman's dream, and you will spend way too much money. We were so pleased with our trip.

They are the best!
Sep 2021
Piragis arranged two work trips into the BWCA for me and my colleagues. We couldn't have been happier with the guides, food, equipment and know how. They are the very best at what they do! Highly recommend if you are going into the BWCA, hire Piragis Outfitters to guide and outfit your experience.

High quality, great service
Sep 2021
I've used Piragis several times over the past 14 years and they always give me great service, good advice, and rental gear that is high quality and does what it's supposed to do.

Drew, Adam, and the rest of the staff are friendly, efficient, and know their stuff. I can always count on them for updates on weather, portage conditions, water conditions, bear and bug issues, and everything else a canoer needs to know before starting a trip.

Piragis Does it Again!!
Aug 2021
We used Piragis as an outfitter for our trip to the BWCA. This is our 5th trip with them and the service as excellent as always. All of the staff are extremely helpful, cheerful and service oriented. I wanted to especially thank Drew and Adam for excellent recommendations and for their patience with my questions. Also a shout out to Emily and Erica for their help with our canoes and gear. Another great trip due to the assistance we received from the Piragis staff!

Perfect Outfitter for our High Adventure!
Jul 2021 • Family
We brought two Scout crews up to BWCAW for our high adventure trip this year. Drew, Adam and the entire Piragis team were wonderful to deal with. This was our first time visiting the Boundary Waters and the guys helped set our minds at ease by answering our questions and helping us with many of the logistics of the trip. The canoes and equipment we rented were all current year models - the lightweight gear really made a difference on some of the long portages we tackled. The hot shower at the end of the trip was pretty great too!

Our guides, Dave Hicks and Joe Larson, were incredible. Both men took the time to bond with our scouts and teach them skills. Both crews absolutely loved their guides and the experiences they helped facilitate. From a leader’s perspective, it was good knowing we had the safety net of an experienced guide given that this was our first time in these waters, but it ended up being so much more rewarding than that. Dave’s passion for teaching was pretty awesome - he put us on fish, took us through amazing routes, showed us little hidden jewels of the Boundary Waters, taught the guys about the local fauna and wildlife, helped hone their outdoor skills like compass reading, bear bag hanging, efficient portaging, and enabled the guys to tackle a really challenging 10 mile loop by the end of our trip without any adult assistance. Joe’s crew was raving about what a great guy he was and that crew learned a ton. Joe and his crew clicked right from the beginning and they were pumped to learn all they could from a guy who essentially lives in these waters.

Piragis is fortunate to have these two awesome guides on staff and we highly recommend them for all the added value, knowledge and skills they brought to both our crew’s trips! We can’t wait for our next trip to experience the majesty of the BWCAW and can’t thank Piragis enough for helping make this experience possible.

"Amazing Outdoor Experience"
Jun 2021
We took a group of 8 in June and went to the BWCA (Entry Point 4 - Crab Lake) for the 2nd year in a row and this is 1st time using Piragis and let me say, THEY WERE AWESOME! We were in the bush for 7 days and the outfitter has us prepared for everything. Adam and his team understand and practice customer service. This was a tremendous experience for all of us and we talked about the treatment we experienced all the way home. The staff greeted us when we walked in the door and the hospitality didn't stop there. They were very accommodating and made quick changes on the fly, gave us 1st hand knowledge of the equipment used, accurate fishing reports, etc... The only thing they weren't able to help us with was the weather as mother nature through the gauntlet at us. But in all honesty, we couldn't have asked for more from the outfitter. We were even able to coordinate a last minute change in extraction time on the last day because we got to the pick up point a little earlier than expected. I highly recommend giving Adam a call from Piragis Northwoods Co if you have any thoughts of an outdoor experience in the BWCA. We will be going again next year and they will certainly be our outfitter of choice - without any hesitation.

Great trip
Jun 2021
we chose to use a guide for our wilderness adventure, and glad we did. Tim was a great guide. He took care of all the details plus doing the cooking for us. The total trip was wonderful, we could not have asked for a better time. I certainly would recommend Piragis to anyone wanting to take a wilderness canoe trip.

Awesome winter adventure!
Dec 2020
I have always been curious about winter camping but afraid of the serious risks associated with having no experience. Outside magazine did a spread about covid safe winter options including a guided winter camping experience with Piragis. I called right away and booked a guided New Years 2 night trip. Our 20, 18, and 12 yr olds were terrified at the idea of camping in Northern Minnesota for New Year's and to be honest we pretty intimidated as well. Tim at Piragis was so helpful, he outfitted us with everything we needed and reached out to us both before and after the trip to ensure we were prepared and had a fantastic time. He connected us with our guide David Hicks, a rock star to say the least. He is a great leader, educator and was really good at engaging our entire family. In addition to winter camping he introduced us to dog sledding and skijorring. These activities and our ability to interact with his dogs elevated our trip from purely educational to awesome fun! I highly recommend this to anyone who is curious about this type of adventure and wants a covid safe experience.

Perfect Covid Vacation!
Aug 2020 • Family
Loved it! Joe L guided us on a camping trip through the boundary waters this summer, and made the trip memorable. He read our family perfectly and planned great meals and canoe trips for our 4 day/3 night trip. Piragis provided top-notch equipment and planning for our trip. Highlights included canoeing day trips, picnic lunches by a waterfall and in Canada, fishing, and cooking together. The camp toilets were very adequate, a concern of ours going in. Definitely request Joe to be your guide! We loved being off the grid for a few days!
