Fun hike

My 6 and 10 year old have went here a few times since it is only about 2 miles from home. Great hike and climb. It is pretty comical to see people with a walking pole in each hand... read more

There is an overlook that gives a great view of Duluth from Hawk Ridge! Interesting Info board about bird species that can be seen there.

We go up to Hawk Ridge every year to watch the raptors migrate. LOVE it. The people running the education are amazing. Fun to watch the people is as much as much fun as watching the birds!!

This has been a favorite spot of mine for more than 40 years. In the mid 70's I helped at the banding station where hundreds of migrating raptors were banded. The view of Lake Superior is spectacular and if you are there in September and the conditions are right you could see over 30,000 birds of prey. This is a... More

We visited in late October, when the larger raptors are moving through. The bird count numbers are much higher earlier in the fall, but the species moving through at that time are the smaller raptors. There were several dozen visitors on hand, and 8-10 volunteers. Several volunteers were involved in the serious business of counting the birds, a couple were... More

World-class birdwatching, especially during the long fall migration. Wonderfully supported by a very knowledgeable, helpful volunteer community staffed through the Hawk Ridge nonprofit -- free loaner binoculars, educational programs, on-site help. Also boasts a great network of hiking trails, some limited on pavement and miles of wilder unpaved, to keep you in awe of the jewel that is Lake Superior.... More

Get up early--grab a cup of coffee--and a roll and head up there. The best sightings are in the morning. We try to make it up here at least once a year. The views are spectacular. almost as good as Palisade Head.

This is an opportunity not to be missed--particularly in the fall when birds are flying south. There are plenty of chances during that time to talk with the folks who are counting the birds flying over head and learn more about the birds. Excellent and knowledgable volunteers to answer questions. A family friendly place to go. Also an excellent venue... More

I have seen more raptors there during the migration than most see in a lifetime. Timing and weather, especially the wind are factors. Peak times are generally in the last part of September when thousands of birds are moving. Check out the website at hawkridge.org.

Fall is the best time to go to the ridge to see migrating birds like vultures, hawks, eagles and others. Plan your visit around the wind! Birds don't fly much over the ridge when the wind is from the south/east. I only saw a few birds due to the wind.
