History comes alive on the Lakefront line of the North Shore Scenic Railroad! During our summer season several trains a day depart the historic Duluth Union Depot for a trip through downtown Duluth, Canal Park, along the shore of Lake Superior and deep into the majestic north woods. Fully narrated tours tell the history of Duluth, the harbor, and the stories of the railroads that built northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.

We purchased our tickets several months before arrival, but still had to wait in the only line, no separate will call window. There was always a view of trees, the forrest or Duluth streets, but not many qualify as scenic. A few nice views of Lake Superior, but those were only at the beginning and end of the trip. The... I am a Duluth native but hadn't been on the train in the longest time...what a great little trip with my nine year old Granddaughter! Thoroughly enjoyable - one of the conductors "Ross" spent extra time with us telling us trivia about one of the boats about to enter the harbor - I learned new stuff about my city I'd... More

We took the 1 1/2 hr trip during Tall Ships weekend. We spent the extra money and got the first class tickets in the dome car. The scenery was less than spectacular. The train moved quite slow. Staff was friendly though. We had a family in the dome car with screaming kids so that didn't help. All in all it... More

Train ride along the Northshore to Two Harbors was a disappointment. Long ride with very little if any view of the lake. Then at Two Harbors some sort of delay to disembark allowing a hurried lunch and back on the train to keep their schedule. No time for sightseeing. Would not recommend this.

We were looking forward to this train ride during Tall Ships Festival. We were very disappointed! The first 5-7 minutes were spent backing up and switching tracks to move forward. It was interesting going past the hotels, etc. on the way to views of Lake Superior. The lake views were gorgeous, but that only lasted about 5 minutes. All we... More

We really enjoyed our train ride. It was the first time our kids (teens) had ever been on a train, so the very fact that we were cruising down the tracks was fun for them. I was disappointed with much of the view, though. I had anticipated catching a glimpse of some of the historic homes such as the Condon... More

If you want the best bang for your buck, I highly suggest the trio package including the scenic railroad, Great Lakes aquarium, and the vista fleet boat cruise! Unfortunately my son fell asleep for the whole train ride, but us adults absolutely loved it! So many cool things to see, and the train-car employees were so helpful in answering questions.... More

We rode the Pizza and Music Train on August 20. Read the reviews beforehand and adjust your expectations. We did and had a great trip! You MUST move to the back of the train - there is a car with reclining seats and large windows (although very cold) and the last car was very old (very vintage and cool!) but... More

We took the 1 1/2 hour tour from the depot north and back. It seemed short, but for the price - perfect. I will definitely book a longer tour the next time I am in Duluth.

What a FANTASTIC experience riding the mystery train! I recommend this for anyone that enjoys a good laugh and has a sense of humor. Scenery was beautiful going up to North Shore in between the mystery being told. Audience involvement made it hysterical, kept to a small group of people on the train. Recommended for any adult looking for a... More
