About Haida Style Expeditions
Haida Style Expeditions is a Haida Owned and Operated, family business practicing sustainable tourism on Haida Gwaii. Owners, James & Shawn Cowpar, identical twins, offer over 25 years of experience in the tourism industry. A team of local professional guides, your safety is our number one priority. We provide a variety of cultural tours into Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, Marine Conservation Area, and Haida Heritage Site. Guests will have the opportunity to visit ancient village sites, meet the Haida Gwaii Watchmen, watch for wildlife, and experience nature on any one of our three different tours into Gwaii Haanas. On our West Coast Tour, we explore the Ancient Village site of Ts'aahl (Chaatl) where one can view two of the last frontal poles still standing since contact and learn about the history of the village. Interesting in fishing on the West Coast of Haida Gwaii, enjoy catching salmon and halibut while listening to local stories. Haawa (thank you)

We travelled with this company to K’uuna Skedans and had a great boat ride out there (there is either a Zodiac or a covered landing craft, and both have their advantages). The staff are personable and safety-minded. We had excellent guides to the site. We learned a lot and they engaged us in conversation that was interesting. The lunch was cooked on site and wonderful—venison, halibut and salmon bites, plus potato/yam bites and salad. Oh, and did I mention the tea/coffee and cinnamon buns on arrival? This is a really good tour to take: about 1.5 hours by boat to the island, a lunch and tour of the abandoned village by two guides whose families came from there. The captains really try to accommodate what you want to see and take pictures of. They couldn’t produce a bear sighting, unfortunately for some of us, but they did take us to a small island with a ton of Stellar’s Sea Lions, and along some cliffs that were spectacular to photograph. Lots of birds were in the area, and a small stag wandered around the historic site grazing as our tour took place, holding still for photos.

This is so much more than a tour - it's a true immersion into Haida land, culture, spirituality and history... and the lunch and snacks provided were delicious! Haawa again!

This was a very interesting trip to (Skedans ) K'uuna Ilnegaay. The boat was comfortable and our guides Rhonda and Robert were knowledgeable and informative about their culture, history and current situation. They gave us a detailed tour of the abandoned village site along with their personal stories. We had delicious lunch of salmon, halibut and venison. Their were 4 in our party and we all had a wonderful experience.

We just completed the grand finale of our 8 day visit to Haida Gwaii with a Haida Style Cultural tour to K'uuna (Skedans).  This experience was the highlight of our visit and we would recommend all visitors book an excursion with Haida Style.  Not only do we believe it is important to do business with a Haida owned and operated company to encourage the local economy but who better to guide visitors upon the sea and into the ancient villages than the decendants of the people who have called these islands home ... forever.  Our guide, Dave, was even able to show us the homesite of his Great, Great, Great Grandmother!  All aspects of the daytrip were professional and well organized.  Reserving can easily be arranged by phone or online.  Staff were at the docks and prepared well in advance.  All necessary gear was provided (rubber boots, waterproof bib pants, float jackets, etc).  The zodiak was comfortable for the 1.5 hour transit to the village site.  A lovely meal of fish, venison, rice, potatoes, salad, and tea or coffee was prepared by Owner/Captain Shawn while Guide Dave conducted the culturally informative tour of the old village site.  On the return trip we were treated to some whale, waterbird, and sealion sighting.  These tours are very popular and although we booked only days ahead it would be best to reserve well in advance to avoid disappointment.
