Must see museum
Jul 2019
I spent a few days in the Crosby-Deerwood area last week with some college friends from the '70s. Visiting this museum was one of the cultural highlights of the trip. Our guide was Don Christensen and he was excellent! He was very knowledgeable and had a nice sense of humor as well. There are 4 rooms with both local, regional and overall machines, tools, clothing, etc. dating back to the 19th century. There is information that will astound you (the Man High project and the mining disaster) that will leave you wanting to do more research.

Hidden Gem in Crosby, MN
Aug 2018 • Couples
This museum is well worth stopping at to enjoy a real train depot packed with memoribilia pertainent to Crosby's history. We were guided through the collections by a very knowledgable docent who shared stories that brought the items to life. My personal favorite collection was perhaps a dozen bridal gowns and period dresses mostly from the turn of the century.as well as a baby crib (metal) from the Crosby
Hospital and a register of the babies born there. When a person visits whose name is in the book, they get to sign it. We found out that we were standing in the women's side of the depot, and later went to the men's side. There are many pictures and tools from the mines in the area, which are no longer operating. You leave with a better sense of life in Crosby in its early history.

We went to the local Crosby History Center Museum and Depot not expecting to see much. Were we ever wrong!! It shows and tells the story of the first space flight EVER for the USA that took place in an old quarry in Crosby. The museum is worth a visit for this reason alone plus much more there.

Great local museum. Wonderful srtifacts

This local, free admission museum is definitely worth a stop. As other reviews have said, it is a museum of the local mining activities as well as many artifacts of Americana. Kids will get a kick out of seeing original snowmobiles, birch bark canoes and 1920 era home appliances. The volunteers are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. A great stop

Wonderful place full of artifacts and displays on the history of The area including the mines, the Man High Project and explains why the area is called the Cuyuna Range! Volunteers manning the museum were friendly and chock full of additional information. Highly recommend stopping.

Surprising little gem of a Museum!
Jul 2017 • Couples
This Museum is more than a railroad museum. We were surprised at all the artifacts that were involved in the history of the Cuyuna Iron Range.
There were three volunteers there who were more than willing to answer any questions. They were informative and fun to listen to.

What a surprise

Was nicely surprised at the old railway items and different things that they have in the museum. Also the local knowlege of the area and the items in the museum. Spent a couple of hours there and very much enjoyed it. Don, Jone and others were so nice and informative. Great place to spend a few hours on local history in Crosby, young and old.

Did you know Minnesota had a role in our race to get to the moon? Check it out!!

5 stars means that I had an enjoyable time at this attraction and would go back. In fact, I had such a good time that I think everyone should make a point of stopping by.

The name is a bit deceiving. While the museum is located on the site of an old train depot, this is actually a museum about the Crosby and surrounding area. The museum is staffed by very enthusiastic volunteers. My daughter and I got a guided tour and it was fantastic.

Learn about the Air Force program "Man High" which was a precursor to NASA. A man went up 19 miles in the atmosphere (launched from the bottom of a local mine pit) in a tin cylinder attached to what looks like a flimsy hot air balloon in order to research the effects on the human body. Ultimately, that research was useful in our getting to the moon in 1969.

Or, learn about the mine accident in 1924 that still is the greatest mining disaster in US history.

The Soo Line Depot Museum isn't the largest you'll ever see, but it's one of the best I've been too. My 9 year old and I had a great time.
