A huge collection of gardens ranging from interesting to brilliant. Wildflowers just starting to come out, along with a few of the cultivated flowers. Our favorite was the Chinese garden, which includes a lovely arch and a rock garden imported from China. The three mile drive was a good introduction. We spent several hours on the three mile walk, but hit upon less than half of the gardens. We plan to return in June to see everything in bloom. Note that to control crowds advance reservations are required. A very reasonable $15 per person fee applies. Under COVID some indoor places - including the cafeteria- are closed. But the large and interesting gift/book shop is open. There is a every nice picnic shelter not far from the main building.

A spectacular resource in the Twin Cities.

Loved this place for arbor and art. It has the largest collection of hostas in the world, 4th largest of crabapples etc. the honey crisp apple was developed there. We took a 3 mile drive through in addition to the walking tour. Very large place. There is also an excellent art collection indoors and out along with exhibitions and shows. Wendy the art curator has great insight to share on the collection.

I like that they are actually requiring reservations so you know it won't be overcrowded. There are nice long trails you can walk and feel pretty secluded. Unfortunately due to Covid, the maze was closed, which my kids remembered and really looked forward to. The fall display of the pumpkin house and scarecrows was pretty cute. We will continue to try and visit yearly.

The new online registration is a frustrating hurdle, especially for the elderly. They used to scan member cards at the gate, but it now takes an extra 20 minutes to get my ticket, log into my elderly relative’s account for a ticket, and log into both our emails to get the barcodes. Being required to register for a time slot also means that you can’t spontaneously visit anymore.

They’ve added a more expensive “EZ Pass” to charge extra for what was once a standard membership. The arboretum itself is beautiful as always, but I’m disappointed in this direction in management.

Whether it is to see the spring flowers, the winter light display, or a fall leaves walk this is a good option. I would recommend getting the annual pass to avoid the entry lines. Also plan on an EARLY arrival for any of the special events as the line up to get in can be daunting. There is a cafeteria in the main lodge. Walking trails through gorgeous woods and sculpture gardens, rose and herb gardens are just delightful. Plan on a 45 minute drive one way from the middle of the Twin Cities. Snow shoe and XC ski trails available.

I bought tickets online and had them scanned on my phone regardless of website saying to print them. Parking lots were close to full around 11am and it was in the 30s -Fahrenheit. The 3 mile walk was pretty with the changing of colors on the leaves 🍁 . If we would have only gone for the 3 mile drive I may have been somewhat disappointed. It’s nice as a Covid restriction option🤗 or for people who prefer not to or can’t walk .

Primarily a landscape demonstration. No satellite toilet facilities along walking path; not senior friendly. No access to water other than paying for it; this after paying $15.00 per person to get in. For some reason I thought this would be a display of flowers, plants, bushes and trees native to Minnesota. It is not. Walking path fails to have a return route other than to parking lot. The landscaping effort here took a lot of money. I fell that money could have been better spent.

At the gate they make you turn around and buy your ticket online??
How Dumb? After we exited we almost felt like - keep driving.
If we had not drove all the way out there we probably would have forgotten the whole thing. The online system would not take our email and I checked it several times to make sure it was correct. After 10 minutes playing with the system. We drove back up to the gate and told the lady what we thought about the system. She was still hesitant to let us through. This is not a good system.

So disappointing the condition of the arb and the current policy of 4 one way trails. Having 1,100 acres one would think that being broad to spread out people would be better but no in this case confine people to a few trails which only leads to congestion. With out a major bloom and the display bed just being replanted it is time to wait for the Univ to figure out that spreading people out would be better.
With shutting off volunteers, garden groups and believe interns and furloughing some staff, they are way behind on usual spring and early summer work.
With Three Rivers parks open and State parks etc plenty of trail to spread out on versus the Arb today

A beautiful and impressive arboretum that taught me some great things I can do at home in my own garden. I was a little confused by the map because i could not easily find the starting points. A few more directional signs would be great. You really have to pay attention so you’re not on a three-mile trek without proper preparation.
We had lots of fun even during the end of August season. This would be a great place for seniors with motorized vehicles and children in strollers because the paths are very safe and well laid out.
