This federal wildlife reserve is bear bones. The Reserve consists of three sections of land - two on the north side of the Minnesota river and one on the south side of it. You can use a pedestrian bridge to traverse between the river sides. The park has a beaten river side path that is used by both bicycles and hikers. The rough, single file nature of the trail adds to the attraction, but it is not for those with mobility issues. The scenery is great and a glimpse of river commerce is available at certain parts.

Most people I saw had their masks and kept socially distanced. The visitor center was closed. Trails were kept clean and clear. I did get mosquito bites. So I’d recommend using bug spray before you go. It was a peaceful place.

A surprise find just a mile from the Mall of America. Spectacular view of the Minnesota River from a look out area outside the administration building. Beautiful walk along a sea of wetlands. Trail eventually brings one to the riverside- which is a bit of a letdown in comparison to the wetlands. On the return the hike back up to the parking area is a good challenge. Freeway noise is a drawback but no surprise do to urban setting.

I was mainly here to check out the Old Cedar Ave Bicycle /pedestrian bridge. The bridge was closed for a number of years. It has now been restored and reopened. This is a good way for bicyclists to travel between Bloomington and Burnsville. Old Cedar Avenue down to the refuge has also been repaved after deteriorating for decades. The parking lot was packed on a Saturday morning. Visitors can get very close to the Minnesota River.and Long Meadow Lake. The water was high in spring. The restrooms in the shelter building were not yet open for the season, but there was a porta potty. This is a beautiful place for a hike. It can be busy on weekends with nice weather.
