Learned about the namesake of Bemidji
Oct 2020
Chief Bemidji was the first permanent settler. During a time of conflict, Chief Bemidji brought people together. Very interesting history stop honoring him and his legacy.
Chief Bemidji is situated along Lake Bemidji north of Paul Bunyan and Babe Statue.

Beautiful statue overlooking the lake

Up on the hill above The Paul Bunyan & Babe statues is a bronze sculpture of Chief Bemidji. Wonderfully done with plaques all around giving history and background. Gorgeous spot overlooking the lake.

This statue is along the walkway next to the lake

Park near the Babe and Paul Bunyan statues...they are near the visitor's center. The main road that runs by Lake Bemidji is 197. You will see a sculpture/statue near the parking lot. Continue walking along the pathway and you will see more sculptures/statues including the Chief Bemidji Statue. The view of the lake is lovely too. This area is well worth the visit if you are in Bemidji.

Well, if you walk about 100’ North from the Paul Bunyon statue along the lake trail, you will come to this statue and learn about the city’s namesake.

The statute is beautifully done. The story is heartbreaking - the US broke all of its treaties with the native Americans. This would be a great educational stop for families or for people who appreciate a gorgeous sculpture.

Bemidji Namesake
May 2018 • Family
We discovered the Chief Bemidji statue while walking near Lake Bemidiji and after visiting the Paul Bunyan and Babe statutes. There is a plaque that provides some information regarding the name sake of the town. The statute is a nice sculpture and it is always nice to see Native-Americans portrayed in an authentic light.

Beautiful Statue

I saw the statue and it quite life like in both size and features. Be aware it is easy to miss the plaques due to their location, we did.

Important landmark statue that celebrates First Nation leader
Jul 2017 • Family
Stop by and see the inspiring statue and plaque which commemorates the namesake of Bemidji . The artwork is impressive and although the story told is quite biased and one-sided it at least pays respect to the First Nation leader who is the namesake of Bemidji.

Large bronze relief of Cheif Bemidji
Jul 2017 • Solo
Previously there was somewhat of a cartoonish statute in similar proximity to where this statute currently resides. The Statute is in Library Park on the western shore of Lake Bemidji. There are four bronze plaques detailing the story behind the real life chief and his contributions to the area. Because of failed treaty promises the Chief nearly got involved in the 1862 uprising in southern Minnesota but choose to sit it out. These plaques tell a great deal of history about the Ojibwe and their life and how history itself affected them. Beautiful location and a great piece of history.
