What an impressive place! I have been to many nature museums and butterfly houses with my children and grandchildren, and this was by far the best!!
The staff was SO engaging! We were all tired from a long car drive, and walked in drooping a little. From the first minute, the staff was so enthusiastic and engaging and my grandsons, 8 ad 5 perked right up!
I have never seen suck knowledgeable, personable and engaging staff. Kudos to them. My little guys insisted on stopping back in there later in the day.

Highly, highly recommend!!

We planned a day trip from Bay Harbor to Sleeping Bear Dunes. It is over a 2 hour drive, and thought a midway stop would help make the trip bearable for a 5 and 8 year old.
We quite honestly did not expect much. We were we pleasantly surprised. They have a amazing array of exptic and unusual butterflys and bugs (just like the name says). The kids were thoroughly entertained, as was I. The staff truly loves their bugs...they don't just phone it in. It was entertaining, and we stopped on our way back for another visit (which is included).

A small place packed with butterflies, bugs, & bees from all around the world. Best butterfly exhibit ever, incredible. And the staff is engaging, they want you to learn and experience nature. You must stop and visit. Easy access on route 72 east of Traverse City near casino. Highly recommend.

Traverse City Butterfly and Bug Zoo has been opened by some very dedicated people. We were received very warmly and encouraged to enjoy and photograph the many different species of butterflies they had on exhibit. My husband and I have traveled to other butterflies exhibits through the years, and have taken hundreds of photos. I was thrilled to see 3 varieties of Butterflies we had never seen, not even in a world famous zoo in North Carolina. The GT Butterfly and Bug Zoo is very easy to access, even for someone who is physically challenged. The whole staff made us feel welcomed and offered any service possible to make us comfortable during our visit. The butterflies were so easy to see and photograph at the same time. It is a wonderful, and long anticipated, addition to the Grand Traverse Area. The 2014 Hours are May 1 - Memorial Day 10 am - 6 pm. Memorial Day to Labor Day 10 am - 7 pm and Labor Day - October 31 10 am - 6 pm. Closed for the Winter Hours

My husband (77) and I took our 7 and 10 year old grandchildren to this exhibit.
It was more than we expected. The knowledge and interaction of the staff was incredible. We were informed about every aspect of the butterfly life cycle. We held newly hatched and adult butterflies from all over the world. Once you learned more about them you appreciated them not only for their beauty but their short life cycles and lenghy migration's each year.
Not to discount the bugs which are fascintating also. Hold a Tarantula!

My Michigan friend and I visited the butterfly farm whilst I was on vacation from Scotland and had a lovely time. The staff are very knowledgeable and had great advise on how we could help our bugs life and the ecosystems within our respective countries. The butterflies are stunning and it was such a moving moment to see the nursery and so pleased the 'special wing' shows that even disabled butterflies are cared for by the experts which is a good lesson for young children

This is not just a butterfly enclosure! Beautiful, active butterflies from all over the world, bugs and a host of other creatures I’ve never seen before, and a knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. This is a self guided tour but with staff all along the way eager to help and inform. I left there with information on improving my own pollinator garden.
This is good for all ages, excellent experience!

Wow ! Don’t let the outside fool you. The staff was friendly and very knowledgeable about the bugs and butterflies. Amazed at how active the butterflies were. Went with a 5 year old and it was perfect for him. Also enjoyed a milk shake at their outdoor snack bar. No public restroom just port a potties.

Honestly I think my husband and I liked it more than our 10 year old grandson. He REALLY wanted a butterfly to land on him. The staff worked hard to move one his way and finally got one on his hand. The staff is outgoing and you can’t help but catch their enthusiasm. They are well educated on the butterflies and bugs within. It is a small place...I think 1 hour is plenty. Due to many groups of small (loud) children we cycled behind them throughout their tour so sometimes we had an area to ourselves. You can “circle” around as many times as you like - butterfly house, bug zoo, gift shop.

A fun place to make a quick 1-1.5 hour stop on the way to wherever your planned destination is. This is appropriate for all ages, but young children will be entertained while being educated by the knowledgeable staff who look for every opportunity to tell you about the inhabitants within. It's a small place, so your stop here will be relatively brief. It's not likely a place you'd seek out for a special trip just to visit but if you're in the immediate area and are looking for something quick to fill the time, this place is quite adequate for that need.
