A lovely evening
Jul 2021
Great customer service, at the start of the summer my wife and I came here for dinner for the first time, we were gobsmacked by the overall experience, the place is delightful! We had some amazing food but were even more pleased by the customer service, The young lady who seemed to be the manager was so lovely and her smile made both our days before we'd even sat down. Will definitely be coming back next year!

Great concept but not the best theatrical experience.
Jul 2019 • Couples
The buildings both theatre and lavatorium are worthy of an ARIBA award but in practice both seating and sight lines are a disappointment.
I also could not hear announcements from the stage.(Singing was OK)
It was a lovely evening, our picnic in the gardens was the highlight of the evening rather than the performance.

They need to do something about the toilet smell.

Hansel and Gretel great performance very comfy seats !

Last night we went to see a production of Hansel and Gretel. What a lovely evening our first visit.
We took a picnic and had tea on the lawn. Every employee we encountered was charming. We arranged to have permission to drop my elderly parents off at the door. This was made very easy plus we had parked at the front of the carpark for when we left.
I am not sure what the comments are re the seating in the theatre we all sat quite comfortably. In my opinion, they are no smaller than any other theatre chair, in fact, I think there was more legroom.
The production was fantastic. We had supper in the library this too was excellent. Well oiled machine employees were charming. Food excellent paced perfectly no rush to have 3 courses back in time for the second part.
We left having a fantastic time.

Porgy and Bess
Jun 2019 • Friends
Wonderful singing from all the soloists and the chorus. But what totally spoils the experience is the shocking and antiquated seating. This time we were in the stalls, so sight lines were good but there are no arms between the small seats. So if you are stuck between 2 large men, you are in for a very uncomfortable and hot evening.
I’ve sat in various locations, as I have been to 5 productions and it’s beyond belief how a brand new theatre can be built with such shocking sight lines, such poor seating and dire ventilation. Obviously the architect had never been to a theatre. I missed half of Tosca because I was stuck on the side, don’t directors understand that the main arias and action, have to be delivered where everyone can see the singer?
It’s so disappointing , I live locally and wanted this to be great, and it isn’t. It certainly doesn’t justify the cost of the ticket, which is comparable with Glyndebourne and certainly not in the same ball park.

Hello, Hello, Thank you for taking the time to send your feedback to us, it does allow us to make improvements for the future. We are very glad that you enjoyed Porgy and Bess so much. I apologise for your experience with the seating. Not all of our seats come with arm rests and our box office staff do make audience aware of this when they are booking certain seats. In order to look into this further, please could you confirm the booking name? Many thanks for your patience and understanding. Best Wishes

Great music, lovely grounds but unacceptable seating
Jun 2019 • Couples
We went to see Porgy & Bess at Grange Park Opera in June 2019. The grounds open at 4pm (performance at 6) and are lovely for a picnic and a stroll (there is also a 100min interval to continue the picnic). There are a number of seating areas and you can either pre-book (tables in teepees or marquees) or just sit on a bench at the venue or bring your own table & chairs. The performance was very good - wonderful cast and musicians. What let it all down was the poor seating. In our case (stalls circle, right in the centre) the seats were super small and you can not sit comfortably at all - there is much more space on Ryanair! The seats don't give you any space to the sides or to the front and you constantly try to find a better seating position / want to try and get away from your neighbor, which takes away most of the enjoyment of the performance. Would not spend that much money (140 GBP per ticket) again for this experience and don't think we'll come again. A real shame though and maybe the venue does find the money to invest in better seating (and / or decides that a couple of seats per row are a better way forward).

Sight lines very bad and just too hot!
Jun 2018
First year was a disaster for myself and guests. Couldn't see a thing from our balcony seats and after being moved for the second act to better seats, still half the stage was not visible and we missed the main aria.
Missed the third act as we were told the wrong time to be back! We did laugh a lot though!
However, the qulaity of singing and music is as good as any around - if you can afford the best seats then probably all wold be fine.
Second visit was so hot my guest thought he might expire and asked to leave and not return for the final act.
Last year I noticed some improvements but still too hot on warm days. Fete Champetre was lovly though.
Will be interesting to see how the third year will be. Ever hopeful for such an amazing creation.

Lovely old building, dull garden being restored, over-rated opera in nearly finished building
Jul 2018 • Friends
A once grand house, with an opera house now built in its grounds. The deal is opera and picnics in the garden. Benefits: handy for locals, avoiding thrash up to London or further into country house venues. The tone is smug and complacent, with a self-regarding preamble by the lady what does, and pats on the head for important people. Oklahoma was done well. The Walkyrie was done OK, the Verdi was poor, both were old-fashioned clumpy bodies and unsatisfactory sets (in fact, the same set pretty much). Not worth a drive to catch at silly high prices.Smart casual is OK. Public transport train to Horsley and then a long walk. We have always taken our own food and wine.

A super venue with great opera, pity that so many seats give a poor view of the stage.

Great gardens, superb ambiance. But I reinforce what others have said about expensive seats having a very poor view of the stage. We were in the stalls and the seats did not even have arm rests.

Delightful ambience
Jul 2018 • Friends
The new theatre here has excellent stall seats with a steep raking; and an acoustic that brings clarity of sound from the pit and from the stage. The grounds are magnificent and offer plenty of picnic spots. The catering is first class.

Now in its second year this country house opera experience has immense appeal. You may have to live with quirky casting but this is definitely a contender on the Summer season calendar.

enjoyable second visit
Jun 2018 • Couples
saw Oklahoma last week, which I enjoyed, good seats classified as 'stalls' though a raised circle, as mentioned, the first half is long and without arms on chairs a bit difficult to get up! ate in the 'tent' and enjoyed the lovely gardens and new lavatorium. I also am v. irritated by the 15 minute spiel at the beginning, i have communications from the ROH, Garsington and Glyndebourne, none of which deem it necessary to have a roll call of benefactors with a captive audience. Can it stop please, might think of donating then....
