About
Hawthorne Vineyards is a friendly boutique vineyard and tasting room destination just four miles North of Traverse City on Old Mission Peninsula. We're passionate about making finely crafted, small production quality wines from our estate fruit. Our 80 acre site is nestled into a ridge above Peninsula Drive with postcard views of East and West Grand Traverse Bays. Hand crafted wines are created from the vineyard’s acreage of Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Lemberger, Gamay, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Gewurztraminer, and Riesling. Surrounding traffic and disruptions vanish as guests make their way up the winding private drive to the most peaceful and serene vineyard destination on Old Mission.

What a view!! This was our first stop on a winery tour and we're so glad they were still open after a bad snowstorm the day before. We had a personal winery guide who gave us great recommendations (Mike at The Magic Shuttle Bus) and let us just take our time enjoying the tastings, and the awesome view. We came away with a club membership (Mike's influence and a decision we don't regret) and a case of their Semi-Dry Gewurztraminer. We will definitely go back to this winery. What a special place!

We had an outstanding experience!! Last summer we found this hidden gem and loved their wines so much that we joined their wine club. This summer we returned and did the VIP experience (my husband, myself and our 25 year old daughter). We cannot recommend this place enough. Chris, the tasting room manager, gave us a tour of the vineyard and told us so much about the wine growing process. It was a fantastic experience!

This was a spur of the moment stop for us at the end of a winter winery day. We arrived in a lull so had full attention of manager and staff. They were very friendly and willing to answer all of our questions. Lovely inside space with panoramic views of both the East and West bays. Popcorn flight was a wonderful addition to our wines. Bought a bottle of the 2022 Gamay which was our favorite. Next time we hope to come in warmer months and try the outdoor seating.

Sam was our wine attendant. She was pleasant and informative. We used our Winter Wine Pass for your tasting and also ordered the popcorn flight which was delicious. Highly recommend and will definitely return in the future.

You can see both sides of the water. Not a good breeze on the deck but there were umbrellas to keep cool. There were picnic tables on the lawn but since its lower, you might not get the view. The Barrel Reserve Chardonnay was my favorite.

This place is very pretty, the wine was fine but the service was very slow. At the end we asked if they had been busy all day (wondering if the chaos and disorder was due to a frazzled staff) and our server proceeded to tell us three times how “retarded” it was that so many buses come through the area. If she had done this earlier I would have asked for a refund and left. Completely inappropriate, insensitive, and ridiculous.

As the manager of Hawthorne Vineyards, you have my apologies for the poor service you received on Saturday, September 29th. More importantly, I am I sincerely sorry for the fact that this employee did not chose her words carefully when talking to you. This language is not accepted at Hawthorne as it is very insensitive and hurtful. I have narrowed it down to whom this employee is and will address this with her. Saturday's in September and October are the busiest time of year at all the wineries and we do our best to manage the traffic and provide the best service possible. Please accept my apologies and we do hope you will give Hawthorne Vineyards a second chance. Jan Van Maanen

We came back to this winery because it had some very good wines the last visit. However, this time the wines were still good but the customer service was lacking. For a while we were the only ones at the tasting counter yet Erica spent a lot of time with her head down focused on something below our view. Several times we had to repeat our questions because she wasn't paying attention to us. Too bad, it's a beautiful view of the bay, and their Cherry Wine and Reserve Chardonnay are just outstanding.

Thank you for returning to Hawthorne Vineyards. We agree with you that our Cherry wine and Reserve Chardonnay are outstanding and our views of the bays are beautiful. As the manager of Hawthorne, I apologize for the lack of customer service given by Erica. She is probably one of the best employees we have at Hawthorne who takes pride in her customer service skills. Since I was not there I cannot tell you what she might have otherwise been focused on, but I can assure you that if you were to return you would have a completely different experience. Please accept my apology and we do hope to see you again!

As my family visited Traverse City, we knew we had to make a stop at a winery. We found a fabulous Groupon for this winery and decided to give it a try. It was fabulous. From beginning to end, the staff was attentive and very knowledgeable as well as friendly. We had the full tasting experience for four. After our tastings, we were treated to a full pour as well as a meat/cheese tray to enjoy on their patio. It was a cool afternoon and the sun was shining. It was the perfect ending to our exploration of the peninsula. Hawthorne is just a little bit off the major road. Easy off and easily access to get back. Well worth the price.

After doing a tasting yesterday at another Vinyard with very little charm, it was a pleasure to find Hawthorne Vineyards. Close in to Traverse City, they have great views overlooking their vineyards, and the bay. the staff was knowledgeable and friendly. Sharon helped us, described each of the wines in detail we were tasting, and was just a pleasure to work with. Thoroughly enjoyable!

This location is beautiful. Well manicured. Many seating areas. Views of both bays. Clean. Abuzz with August’s hornets. And the wines...of our 9 wine tastings, 4 wines were pretty okay.

Hi, is there a nearby nice hotel near Hawthorne Vineyards? And do you pick up and drop off at that hotel. How should we dress for this tour? And do you have a restaurant at the vineyard? Thank-you, R. Jones

Cambria hotel and suites, you will love it here. Not to many shuttles going to any vineyard. As for a dress code come as you are and no restaurant at this vineyard.
