My husband and I heard how good the sandwiches were at the general store. Unfortunately, we visited on an off day for the owner. We arrived at 1115 and the store had not opened. Another family were also waiting. The owner opened the door and was putting out a sign that she would open at 1200 rather than 1100. Although she let us and the other family come in for a moment, she said she could not help us or make us a sandwich. She said she had no one to help her and just could not do it all. While I felt bad for her, potential costumers don’t really want to hear excuses.

Fun stop for a “look back in time” and a chat with the proprietor (a real friendly character full of local knowledge). The Mission General Store is definitely a throwback in time and worth a stop. It’s small but crammed with local foods, candies, liquor, wine and beer. There are old items (think museum stuff) that is not for sale but available to view., and a grill where you can get fresh cooked items like burgers, fish sandwiches, hot dogs, etc. We bought a wonderful cherry soda made in Michigan and a jar of cherry salsa to try. Fun bit of time.

This place was really neat. It is a combo of old store museum and grocery store. They also have sandwiches you can order. We got snacks and enjoyed the atmosphere. It is dark and tight quarters but worth the time. They have a lot of old school candy and fun assortment of sodas. They have parking and some outdoor seating.

We drive over 500 miles to visit and carefully planned out timing because we knew they didn’t open until noon so went to lighthouse first. Arrived at 12:44 to store and were so excited. Sign said closed but lights were on. We decided to park and as we hit out heard voices inside. Got to front door and saw small sign said “Opening today at 12:45p”. Ok, it’s 12;46 now we will wait. It was windy, cold and raining but we stood on the porch. After about 10 more minutes we heard a man say “you have people waiting porch”. Another 10 minutes and no acknowledgment! Not wanting to get sick from weather we got back in car, left and as we pulled in front saw a woman open the door. We had timed everything and had to be elsewhere for a tour. Absolutely disgusted by the behavior of ignoring the only customers you probably were having that day. Not like anyone else was waiting or even on road to visit

Visited in early September and was thrilled to see Marcy and the team are keeping the OMGS going strong through the pandemic. It's only been around since the 1830s!! Had to have the pizza which has been called by some (i.e. me) "the best pizza in Michigan". It was awesome as always. Haserot Beach is about 2 min drive from the store. The rest of the Old Mission Peninsula was beautiful as always and the OMGS is its hidden jewel. Can't wait to make it up there again. Andi

Having both been self isolating for months, my elderly mother and myself went for a scenic drive to celebrate the lockdown being over. She wanted an icecream so we went in with masks and ordered. Got served by a very sweet lady. We went outside to eat. I could not finish the icecream and as it was very humid, it was dripping everywhere. I couldn’t find a trash outside so went inside to throw it away. With no trash in sight here either, I asked the lady where I could find one. She told me she wasn’t supposed to take our trash but kindly gave me a paper bag to put my icecream in. As she took it from me I realized I had not put my mask back on and was apologizing profusely and backing away. The owner of the store happened to see this and became incensed. He followed me out to my car where he was screaming at me and telling me I was not smart not knowing about the trash policy and about not wearing a mask. He would not stop and was still yelling at me as I drove away. My mom was actually afraid he was going to hit me! I was reduced to tears and my mother was very distraught by this experience. After reading reviews, I noticed that this was not his first time behaving in an unbalanced and irrational way. I would definitely not recommend going there with any children as he was scary!

This place is why you should get out and explore. On the outside it looks rundown. Go inside and it feels like you stepped back in time 150 years. At first it appears disheveled and strange. Stuff everywhere, eclectic disorganized mess.... Give it more than a minute, walk around. Looks can be deceiving and don’t just a book by its cover. Everything is clean, no dust or cobwebs. Check out the cool retro candy, salsa, pop, antiques. (Caution: Watch little kids. Not kids friendly in that many things at their level that is antique and they aren’t to play with or easily tip over)

Okay: then try their baked goods:
Spinach Pie: Awesome
HUGE cinnamon rolls: Awesome
HUGE chocolate cookies: Awesome

Main course: BEST we’ve ever had! No joke, we’ve had pizza all over the country including Chicago and even Italy: this wins hands down. It’s all homemade there. It’s a wait because they make it from scratch and bake it. Absolutely worth the wait and drive up to the point. You can eat it in their dining area which was cool too.

Then finish with their ice cream. It great too.

It’s been in operation for 180 they said. It’s what we always want on a road or in our case a boat trip: unique special special experience that is a diamond in the rough.

We stopped at this charming, historic general store to pick up a few items for a quick lunch. Really enjoyed talking with the gentleman at the cash register. He was very enjoyable to talk with. Loved the history, and the Spanakopita was great! We have been before and will certainly go back again. It’s the type of place that makes you enjoy vacation.

Take a step back in time with this general store that still is in operation. Grab a few snacks, refreshments, sweet treats, or even a freshly made pizza as you explore the peninsula and head up to the lighthouse. A hidden gem off the main road for sure!

We love the Old Mission store! They have a wonderful assortment of goodies to enjoy at the nearby beach. The owners are eccentric and always so friendly. Everything combined makes this a must-stop every time we drive out the peninsula.
