The work the community put into Hickory Hills Recreation Area is amazing. ($3.5 million in improvements) As a beginner xc skier I truly enjoy the experience. Expert to beginner trails were wonderful with nice vistas, grooming and un crowded trails. The lodge was wonderful with a great fireplace and good food service. The staff was very accommodating and pleasant. We rented equipment which was very reasonable($14). Both summer or winter it is a wonderful spot to spend the afternoon. The Alpine skiing there is fun too.

Our family has skied at Hickory Hills for the past 10 or so years. Our son is now 12 and joined the Grand Traverse Ski Club (GTSC) when he was 6 years old. He loves to ski and Hickory is really why! It's small and quaint and historic and just right for learning to ski! So our son was in the age-appropriate ski clinics to being with, then moved on to the age- and skill-appropriate racing. GTSC is based here. The woman at the counter inside the office who sells you your lift pass is so amazingly friendly and we know that she would take care of our son if anything were to happen. She has been very kind to him over the years! The GTSC staff who teach our kids are wonderful! The way they teach is so effective and perfect for all types of kids. We are so thankful GTSC gets to do their thing with our kids at Hickory Hills! We actually live on the same street so it's quite convenient for us too! The lodge is one story with seating, storage, bathrooms, snackbar, and a really cool fire pit that heats the whole place up! Hickory opened for skiing in 1952! We just love the history of the place. There's a very cool book, like a coffee table book, that's available with pictures and text about the place! Don't be turned off by the fact that right now there are only tow-ropes. They work just fine and build muscle and balance in us! When your kids have a race somewhere and have to use a tow rope to get up the race hill, these kids have an edge! Ha! All the staff at Hickory are very kind and fun and helpful. We have left our son there oodles of times by himself and with friends and the staff have helped him with all kinds of issues! They are always on the look out for any problems. There are several hills for down-hill skiing and several trails for cross-country, including lighted trails. Hickory Hills isn't just for winter either. We love to hike around in the other seasons. You can see far from up high including the bay. It's different depending what season you're in and well worth being there for all 4! Hickory is getting a major facelift soon - right now things are happening like treed areas are being cleared for new hills and parking. A large lodge is in the plans with room for private parties. A couple chair lifts are also in the plans. We hope it can retain its quaint charm along with growing to meet the needs of everyone who wants to use it! HIGHLY recommend checking Hickory out if you want to learn to ski and/or want to ski close to Traverse City for the day/night.

Came to go skiing, but one of the lodges was closed. Found this hidden little gem. Definitely worth giving it a try for the price

This review of disc golf course…

Poorly laid out as is bordering private property on edge of first 4 holes… After you can figure out on your own where the course is as there is NO signage in the lot where it is.

Poorly maintained… looks like it had a good start and infrastructure is there just… needs much TLC..

Nothing to brag about…
