From check in to check out, you will not be disappointed. When staying at the Inn, take full advantage of the complimentary hospitality hour. You will get to taste many of the wines paired with delicious farm to table hors d'oeuvres that you will remember long after your stay. (We especially loved the goat quesadillas). Make sure you wake up in time to take advantage of the daily gourmet breakfasts and freshly brewed local coffees. Take the time to explore the grounds, watch the horses, and pet the goats. With each stay, guests are given a pass to the VIP tasting room. Our experience at the tasting was as phenomenal as the rest of our stay. Brian really knew his wines and we learned so much about the processes used to make them. Plus, you have access to the premium wines and spirits in the VIP Barrel Room that a regular tasting room guest would otherwise not have.

It’s been 15 years since last here for an anniversary. Still as beautiful, charming, romantic and elegant as then. If ever near Traverse City or Sutton’s Bay,MI stop by for a tour of the B & B and the winery/tasting room.

Black Star Farms in Suttons Bay is a definite must visit. The iconic red inn is surrounded by rows of vines, green forests, horse stables, and a restaurant (Hearth & Vine). There are several tasting rooms, with the Terrace Patio partially outside and perfect for taking in the view. The relaxing atmosphere and friendly service make it feel like you’re hanging out in a friend’s yard. Wines are served by the glass, bottle, and in flights (although unfortunately in plastic cups).

We stopped at Black Star Farms at the end of a full day wine tasting. We thought we would get some food and have some more wine. We stopped into the tasting room and asked about food. We were told that they didn’t serve food but we could go to the Hearth and Vine restaurant go food. It is across the road on the same grounds. We ordered our wine and when it was served we paid so we could go and get some food. We were then told we couldn’t take our wine with us. This is after they just told us we could get food there. The tastings were in plastic cups so we took our last two and went across the road. We orders a charcuterie board at Hearth and Vine. There were very few people there and much better service. Wish we would have started there. They didn’t have the tasting but you could get the same wine by the glass. We will definitely go back to Hearth and Vine.

I recently visited with a friend who has never experienced wine tasting on LP which is one of my favorite Michigan things! In taking her to some of my favorites, we went here with the expectation of the wonderful times I've had in this winery. I was so disappointed in the lack of enthusiasm of the staff....there was no interaction whatsoever....we chose random wine samples ourselves! The staff was preoccupied with removing/replacing labels on wine bottles or just chatting amongst themselves. I still enjoy Black Star Farms but I was hesitant to even purchase a bottle on this trip up.

The grounds are lovely, if that is what you want to pay for, along with a delicious breakfast. The Lyra room is super tiny with a Formica insert for a shower/tub and mold in the bathroom vent. The room is so small that you have to enter the bed from the end because there is no room to get in along the side. Our friends paid the same amount as we did and had a room that overlooked the stables, had a beautiful bathroom and very large room. Between the two, there was no price differentiation
We had no hairdryer and were told "Only certain rooms had hair dryers so we had to wait for someone to check out before we could get one".
The bike trails mapped out around the hotel are really tractor paths that are only good for mountain bikes. If you want to really bike the trails, drive about 2 miles down the road and park along the side for the Leelanau Trail. That trail is super!

The female who first seated us was such a bad representative of this winery that I'm surprised that this winery is listed as #1! She had nothing to say about the wines and could only recommend one wine that was too sweet for our tastes, but followed with, "Well, we have others". Her disinterest in us or the wine was obvious, she couldn't even answer my questions to my face, had her back to me the entire time. Fortunately, a guy took over from her and saved the visit from a below one rating. He, at least could tell us about the various wine and grapes, along with suggestions. I won't be bothered to visit this winery again, there are plenty more with a much more welcoming atmosphere.

My wife and I enjoyed three 2 oz wine tastings at the Black Star Farms Winery. The process by which we were seated was very efficient. The serving staff were attentive and informative. The wines were pleasant, but nothing jumped out at us, so we were satisfied simply with the tasting and didn't purchase any bottles to go. The estate is impressive, with an inn, distillery, cafe, stables, the winery, and hiking trails onsite. We hiked the green trail after our wine tasting - very nice trail!

Innkeeper David met us at the Inn’s door and greeted us by name, recalling our last visit in June. We chose the Diadem room for this, our third visit to Blackstar, and we both felt that this was the most perfect suite yet, roomy with a comfortable king bed, warmed by the largest fireplace we’ve ever encountered outside of a ski lodge. Diadem was of course meticulously clean, with a modern, cutting edge feel. The hospitality hour was a fun way to sample the local wines with some tasty snacks, while Mission Bay (only 5 minutes away) provided access to the beautiful Leelanau Trail for a snowy hike. The next morning greeted us with a delicious French toast breakfast downstairs, followed by our 15 minute drive to downtown Traverse City with fun shopping and a great dinner out. The Inn always provides a perfect respite from daily life, a romantic stay in a gorgeous, serene woodlands setting, with gracious, knowledgeable staff. It’s reasonably priced, comparable in quality to the high end chateaus of Europe we’ve encountered: we’ll be returning year round.

We went here on a rainy day just as they opened having heard of the " hunt for reds October'' we thought we could get the tickets at a winery- we have a similar thing along the river between MN & Wi and that is how it works. but we were told rather abruptly " you can only do that on line in advance" then we were asked if we had reservations ( no but there were only 2 other couples there) and again rather abruptly " then you can only do a flight" - we did find out this was common at the bigger places...it appears that if you want to learn about the wine rather than just drink it you need a reservation. having said that they do have some really good wines and will ship 6 bottles for free so that is what the 4 of us did.
