Finally went over to see this on Rochester Road. Very limited parking and NO birds. It appears that they have abandoned the area and moved on.

I noticed the great blue heron rookery for the first time this year. There were about eight nests in the huge tree in the middle of the wetlands. So the nests are noticable when driving on Ryan. Just look west between 21 Mile and 23 Mile, just south of 22 Mile Road. There are two trails, one on either side of the wetlands. There is a small parking area just north of 22 Mile, on the west side. I want to say the birds are noticable maybe May to June. The birds were quite large in June. The nests looked empty in early July.…

I have walked in this area twice now. once in the evening with a scout troop and once in the day with my family. There are many trails that wind all around the rookery.

It takes a little bit of a walk down a path to get to the site to view the rookery. You need binoculars for the best advantage. It's great to watch the birds during nesting season and get a look at the babies as they merge from the nests. Truly awesome seeing these large birds fly in from where ever. …
