I think when they moved it was to a smaller facility. In my opinion, it had very little history of the river and even less history that was more than a 100 years old since most of it was mostly post-1910's. Pricey for what they offered; gift shop was pricey and very limited in gifts.

I am sorry to hear that we were not what you had expected when visiting. The Museum starts with first settlers to the area and moves thru the years to what the St. Mary's River was used for with fishing, logging and hydro power it is not all about 1800's early 1900's history. We moved to this location in July of 2009 and our gift shop isn't your typical gift shop we carry items that are more locally made and not the tourist type items.

The River of History Museum is a top notch facility and presents the area's history starting with the Native Americans to present day. The three videos and 2 live webcams add to the presentations. The audio wands are very interesting and add another dimension to the many displays. The live LSSU web fish cam and the Corps of Engineers upbound- downbound views of the St. Mary's River bring life to the Museum. An interactive logging Gallery is great for the children of all ages. The Gift shop has many Native American products for sale as well as many books of the area. A must see for history buffs

This is a nice little museum in the downtown area. It is very well done. You can get tickets for both the Museum Ship Valley Camp and this for $17.50.
I learned a number of facts that I did not know about Michigan history.

This museum struck me as a politicaly correct museum. In my opinion a museum should show you what was, not what is the current explanation of why.

The River of History has facts about the area and the past. Some of our partners that helped build our displays may have expressed opinions that are theirs and not those of the River of History.

Neat little museum that showcases the river and surrounding area with attractions for kids and adults. Entry fee was reasonable when purchased as a combo-ticket with the ship and tower. If you're in the area it's a must see.

A very fine modern museum experience in the Soo. The central theme of the museum is Baawitigong ("place of the rapids") or the rapids of the St. Mary's River. Content thoughtfully explores Ojibwe, French, British and American history of the region. Multi-dimensional exhibits are well done, authoritative, with several hands-on experiences.

A definite must-see if traveling through Sault Ste. Marie.

A beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding areas, historical presentation very informative, the admission fee could be a little lesser....

Thanks for reviewing but I think this one was probably supposed to be for the Tower of History as they have the panoramic views from the top.

I was not sure to put this at a 2 star rating, maybe it is a 3...but I did not think it worth our time, nor the $5.50 entrance fee (per person). The staff was very friendly, and the old building is architecturally interesting. The displays are okay, but I have to admit, boring. The settler's cabin is good. The auditory, done in story form, is good too, but who really sits long enough to listen to them all? The gift shop is okay also, and there is a AAA discount, but be sure to ask/show your card. Is a place to stop if you are alone or with another adult, if you really like history ( I do..), but not worth paying for kids, or a large group of people.

Thank you for leaving us a review! This was before we moved into our current location downtown on Ashmun Street. If you get a chance to come back and visit you won't be disappointed with the displays and everything we have to offer.
