According to Cinema Treasurers the Soo Theater opened in 1929 shortly before talkies came in. The theatre was built for vaudeville so the stage has flies and besides an orchestra pit there were two bays for organ pipes but no organ was ever installed. This makes the Soo the only theatre in the Eastern UP built for stage shows. My mother told me when the theatre opened there was a Hollywood Style Parade of 'celebrities' up Ashmun Street then the Soo's High Street. The 'celebrities' were driven in limos and 'interviewed' in front of the theatre before its official opening. My mother was 'Greta Garbo'. When I was in the Soo in the 50's besides the Soo there was the Temple Theatre and Starlite Drivein. The Soo was much larger than the Temple, as I recall, with a large CinemaScope screen with 4 track sound. The interior seemed to be a sort of Spanish/Moorish inspired fantasy with ochre or yellow coloured stucco walls. Years later the theater fell on hard times and was halved with a cement wall dividing the auditorium. Thanks to the Soo Theater Project this fine historic theater was saved and today is a very active arts center and also seems to be an arts teaching institute. The Soo now provides the area with Broadway musicals, concerts, recitals etc.programmes for children and even a small film festival. I was so happy to salute this dear old friend on a recent trip.
