If you have never seen how locks work, you should take the time and watch a boat go through the locks here. The viewing platforms are great, and afford several different perspectives. It is free, covered, yet open air on 3rd floor, glass window on 2nd floor so good in lots of climates.

It was fun to see a large ship move through the lock, but check the schedule in the visitor center so you know when the bots are coming through. They keep a schedule in the visitor center. We were there at 4:30 and saw the next boat was scheduled at 7 p.m. So we went to dinner and we're back... More

The locks were our main reason for visiting the area. We truly enjoy the ships and learning about the history. They have a very nice visitors center with free short movies to watch. The staff are friendly and helpful.

Enjoyed watching freighters pass through the locks. There is a wonderful information center at the locks with great 3D models of the lakes and what the terrain under water looks like. The information center has lots to look at. There is a Ship Wreck Museum just down the road, free admission! Lots of ships went missing in the great lakes... More

This was very cool to see how they pass the ships between the lakes with such different water levels. Nice viewing area and visitors center. Stairs and a ramp to access the viewing area.

I insisted that my husband and I stop for a short visit during our 6th anniversary trip in the U.P. We ate a quick, late lunch during which we called the information line to find out if any ships were passing through the locks around 2. Sure enough, but the food came out late, so we were concerned about missing... More

Very interesting and great center. You know how long before ship coming and what type. The observation towers are multi-level and offer good views. They are large and accommodate many people.

The museum is as interesting as the locks! This staff is helpful, knowledgable, patient answering questions. Museum is great for children (this is from 4 teachers in my group). Viewing ships going through the locks is not to be missed!

Fun place to visit. We saw several barges, a tug boat, and a tourist sight seeing boat go through the locks. In between the times we walked to a restaurant and had lunch. It was a beautiful day when we were there. Well worth the time to see it and how it all works. Very nice visitor center also.

If you are interested in the maritime history of the Great Lakes or big container ships, this is probably an interesting visit. Unfortunately, it wasn't a great stop for a family with two teenagers. You can climb a few flights to an outdoor viewing gallery of the locks, but there isn't much to see unless a ship is coming through.... More
