What a great experience. There were 14 in our family group and so enjoyed this never before experience. The crossing is not a long distance. It does cost $2.00 each way. But those young polite boys so earned it , plus a good tip!

The ferry ride was pretty awesome to have an older way to cross the river. The cost was minimal and way to go to Saugatuck. There is no parking in Saugatuck, so parked at Mt. Baldy and took ferry across to walk around and had some ice cream.

This is a chain ferry from the 19th century that runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day across the Kalamazoo River and is the only hand-cranked chain ferry left in the US. The trip is only about 100 yards but it only costs $1. You get on/off it from a ramp so it is fairly accessible and we had no issues with a stroller. High school kids crank the ferry and accept tips but they are typically entertaining. It does close during inclement weather and high winds. Fun ride across the river to/from town and the Mt. Baldhead lookout and Oval beach. We rode it multiple times.

Old fashioned and a unique form of transportation, but very unreliable service. The ferry seemed to be shut down more than it was actually running during our most recent trip to the area. We took the ferry to hike to the top of Mt. Baldhead and got stranded because the ferry stopped running in the middle of the day due to “high winds” which were more like a light breeze. Unfortunately, the walk back to Saugatuck takes an hour. Also none of the ferry operators were wearing masks, and they seemed to give no thought to maintaining a safe number of passengers to ensure proper distancing.

Written on Facebook and on the board at the dock that will open at 11am .. 30mins later , not yet open and another customer (who was waiting as well) decided to call them ... answer that they may come to open at noon ... I am sorry but in the middle of 4th of July week-end , this is really BAD service !

We had chosen our hotel across the way because of the chain ferry. Had no idea that it isn't running. The water was completely calm the 3 days we were there and it didn't run at all. Bummer - had to drive around to town when we could have gone back and forth on the ferry.

So much fun! It takes a few minutes to get across but it is very cool to experience and my daughter loved getting to turn the crank. It was a highlight for her. We went across to climb the steps to Mt. Baldhead. The guys working on the Ferry were very sweet and chatty. it really was fun and for a quick journey across the river I highly recommend it.

This was a fun experience as it’s the only chain ferry left in the US. It is also a good idea to take this if you are making a trip to Mount Baldhead or Oval Beach (assuming you can carry your stuff). It’s a short trip and it only costs $1 each so have your cash ready. It’s run by college kids so we made sure to give some tips on both trips. I’ve seen in other reviews that they ask kids if they could turn the crank but it was never offered in the two trips we took.

The only issue I had is when we arrived there was barely a breeze but it was closed for two hours ‘due to high winds’. We were not in a rush so we did other things in the city and then took the ride. The next day it was completely closed due to winds and again the weather seemed fine (there were no weather watches/warnings) and we saw many other boats on the water. So just make sure to have a plan b in place in case you can’t take it.

We would've given a 5, except for the fact that when we were ready to cross back over to where our hotel was, the ferry closed down for the day. The sign said due to winds. However, it was only very windy for a short period of time. And the fact, as a few other stranded people said, the ferry is run on a chain, so it's not like it's going to blow down the river. The weather ended up being great, so why they didn't open back up, was another mystery. They left a lot of people stranded. The number that was posted on their sign to call for other area transportation was also closed. We ended up calling our hotel and they called us a taxi.
So, all in all, for the convenience of not having to drive, it's worth it. Next time we come though, we'll make sure we have taxi phone numbers on us, just in case!

It is the only one left in the US. A must and everyone of any age would enjoy the ride. It cost 1.00 each way.
