The area at the base of the stairs actually offers a better view of Saugatuck than the top of the stairs. On a weekday in late summer there were only a few people making the climb. Take caution if you have any issues with heights since it is a straight climb up although there are seating areas to take in the view and catch your breath. Parking is limited but free.

I could see this being beautiful in the fall, but we were really disappointed with the view at the end of July. We thought you would be able to see Lake Michigan. There are places to rest along the stairs and we did not travel down the other side to the beach which I'm sure was beautiful! I would love to do this again in the fall hoping for a better view!

The stairs are a workout and we were hoping for a great view of both the river and Lake Michigan. Unfortunately, the overgrowth at the top prevented any view of Lake Mi. View at top is just mediocre. I personally wouldn't climb all those steps again.

You can get your exercise by climbing the steps to the top, but don't expect to see Lake Michigan when you get to the top. You will see some of the river and parts of Douglas and Saugatuck in the other direction, but in the summer, the trees block out a lot. There are resting benches at landings along the steps and longer benches at the top. You can continue down the other side of this dune to a beach, but we didn't.
To be honest the area next to the river at the bottom is more inviting in terms of scenery with some picnic tables available. The museum was closed due to COVID so we could not visit that.
Parking is tight, but adequate. Rest rooms at bottom are also adequate. It is an OK attraction, but don't make a special trip just to see Mt. Baldhead.

On an unseasonably warm and dry November afternoon we climbed to the top of the Sandy dune of Baldhead to the overlook at the summit. The views were beautiful of the Kalamazoo River. Turn around and the Great Lake Michigan rises up!

Great place beautiful views at the top of the steps well worth it. Lovely walk on the blue trail. Would be nice to see a map top to point out the trails for the tourists. Luckily met some locals to point us in right direction.

Great fun...but lots of work. The stairs are always fun. Not a great view from the top but that is ok. Keep climbing down the dunes to Lake Michigan. But do remember you do have to climb back up.

282 stairs are a LOT to climb. We ended up taking the dune side down to Oval Beach and walked the road back to the Chain Ferry. Quite a hike, but a great family adventure.

There are benches to rest about every 40 steps. The history behind the Baldhead is very , very interesting . So glad tthe stairs to the top of this radar tower has been preserved for others to learn about and to see the beautiful view.

I use Mt Baldhead to gauge my fitness. With 323 steps and over 200 vertical foot climb, you must be young or fit or both. Just a lovely view over Saugatuck, Kalamazoo River, & Lake Michigan.

Is there a fee for this in March? A reviewer mentioned no fees in the off season...thanks!

Yes, as you pull up to mountain baldhead , you will see a sign. The parking is a sandy lot the left of the sign and in front of the public bathroom which is also left of the sign. Note that it’s a small lot for maybe 5-6 cars at a time. However, I’ve been there twice and never had a problem finding a spot. I’ve gone early like 10 am

How can I get I Climbed Mt Baldhead T Shirts?
Written July 14, 2016
we're working on some new Mt. Baldhead designs at Landsharks this summer. We've sold several in the past - not exactly "I climbed Mt Bladhead" but some great designs.
