Rented the Beverly for our anniversary. We loved that the boats have been retrofitted with electric motors. It definitely means you go at a slower speed along the river, but it's a great time to cruise and enjoy the weather. The staff was helpful and really sweet when we came back and it downpoured; they were there with towels to help us dry off and we enjoyed a drink at the bar.

Had a great experience with our pontoon rental with Retro Boat Rentals of Saugatuck from the time we made reservation to when we checked the boat back in. Rental booking was easy, reminders of our rental were timely prior to the day of our rental, same day communication both before, during and at the end of our day was great. Staff very pleasant and informative. Pontoon we rented was brand new, we were first time renters of the boat and it was in pristine condition. Overall excellent experience and fun day was had by all.

We LOVED our boat rental. It was the perfect start to our day and the highlight of our bachelorette weekend in Sauagatuck! Julian texted us to remind us of the address, and met us at our boat to give us helpful tips and tricks and show us the ropes. He and the other employees were kind, energetic, and set a fun tone for our safe, but exciting pontoon ride. The price was exactly right, especially because we were allowed to bring our own food and drink. They even allowed us to have a speaker and advised us where we could safely anchor to swim around. We would absolutely do this again and can’t recommend the experience more highly!

My wife and I were visiting Saugatuk for the second year in a row. We did not try the retro boats during our previous visit and wanted to do so. We made reservations on-line and Gracelynn got us all set up with the waiver, map instructions and boat instructions. She was very nice and the directions were very clear.

The boats are electric and only travel at a maximum speed of 5 mph, which is fine because the entire trip is a "no wake" zone, anyway. At that speed, the trip fits perfectly into the allotted 1 1/2 hours.

The trip starts towards Lake Michigan and travels down the river. The scenery is beautiful and the houses along the way are magnificent. The cove is the turnaround area before reaching the channel to the lake. The cove has a nice sand beach and small dune area which is a local spot for swimming, if you are so inclined.

The trip continues into Kalamazoo Lake after passing by your starting point. This is also a nice ride and passes some really nice boats in the marinas.

We enjoyed the river part more than the second part. If we had to do it again, we might have packed a lunch for a picnic in the cove or a quick swim.

After returning to the rental headquarters, we had an appetizer and drinks right on the premises and right by the water. We watched the boats go up and down the river.

We have cruised the Kalamazoo River for years on our own boat, but when the family came to town, these funny little boats looked like a novel way to see the river and safely share a few laughs and beers. Everyone gets to be the captain on a donut boat! After detailed instructions from the friendly staff, we selected our beers , packed the cooler, and easily left the dock behind. Five miles per hour sounds seems slow, but we had so much fun as we headed toward "The Cove" , or what the locals call the Old Harbor. You cannot miss this spot! There is often many boats here, with lots of people having fun, but we had the place to ourselves. We beached the boat and got out and sat on the shore for awhile, playing music and enjoying the day. We could have gone swimming, but in May, the water is pretty cold. We did a 2 hour cruise, but it takes 25+ minutes to get to the destination, so if its a nice hot day, I say get three or four hours if you can afford it.

Overall, a fun thing to do in Saugatuck. The price was a bit steep for an electric boat that goes 4mph. Nice that you can buy drinks to take on the water, but 2 drinks with rental is a simple thing to throw in to justify the cost. Other than the price point, service was the main reason for loss of stars. We went at the end of season, so maybe this is not the case all the time, but we were checked in by teenagers who had no organization, didn't give us details, and didn't have our correct boat charged. We had to take a different boat and the passenger seat was missing so I couldn't even sit with my husband on our honeymoon. Definitely a fun thing to do with family and friends. The service and overall quality did not meet my expectations for $150 for 1.5 hours of boat time.

These are electric boats with incredibly low power. They are excruciatingly slow. The permitted range of use is in Lake Kalamazoo and down the channel towards Lake Michigan, waterways that are heavily trafficked by far larger and faster boats. In one of these boats you are constantly in the way, being passed, and fighting wakes. Plus on a sunny day there's no way to even go fast enough to create a little breeze for relief from the heat. It seems like a nice idea, but the reality just isn't at all pleasant. Plus the rental is pretty pricey. We paid $268 for three hours (which we didn't use - we wanted out). I applaud the thought, but it's not well executed and I won't be doing this again.

7 family members ages 11-53 years had a great Sunday afternoon on Sprinkles. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and the boat was comfortable and easy to operate. Alcoholic beverages were required to be purchased there but were reasonably priced. Fun time beaching the boat and swimming in the river, as well as watching the other boats go by.

I highly recommend renting the Donut Boat! We enjoyed cruising (7 miles per hour) up and down the lake. 8-10 people fit comfortably on the donut boat. They provide a Bluetooth speaker on board.
The staff were friendly and informative, making sure our “captain” knew how to operate the boat. The booking process was easy.

We rented Laverne on a VERY busy Sunday, but the staff had us checked in and on the water in no time flat. Enjoyed boating past a concert in the Cove and the live music at the bar on Kalamazoo Lake, but having a boat-provided Bluetooth speaker was a great touch. The boat was very easy to use and went at the perfect speed in the river. The rental was the perfect amount of time on the water. We recognized all the other Retro boats and all of them got lots of looks from those around us. Thanks for a very enjoyable afternoon.
