We visited Star of Saugatuck on August 31 for our 20th wedding anniversary celebration with our 2 teenage daughters. We purchased our tickets over the phone on the morning of because rain was in the forecast several days that week and we wanted to give ourselves the best experience possible. We arrived a little early and relaxed near the loading dock with covered seating. Your table is assigned in advance, so it doesn't matter what order you board. With covid, there are only 10 tables, all spaced nicely. We weren't sure what section to request, so I chose the front of the boat, and that ended up being right next to the bar. If you are super anxious about anyone walking near you (even with masks enforced), select the rear. It was pleasant for us because we had no one in front of us, and the bar staff was very friendly and we enjoyed discussing the areas we passed with them. The tables and chairs are plenty comfortable, and the drinks are limited, but still something for everyone - we got our girls oj and sprite and made them mocktails. Best of all, they allow you to go down to the first level and experience the water at the very front of the boat, which I HIGHLY recommend doing. Only one other couple came down with us, I guess the others had no idea what they were missing out on because it was INCREDIBLE! When we were completely alone, we were able to remove our masks and inhale the fresh air. No fish smells here, so pure enjoyment. It truly is breathtaking. We would have been devastated if it had been a windy day and unable to enter the lake, so do pay attention to the weather when you're scheduling your trip. This is a must do if the weather cooperates, and we will absolutely go again. Perfect anniversary memories!

Family took the sunset cruise. They sold only the top level and tables were nicely spaced. We enjoyed the trip up and down the river. The rough waves on Lake Michigan didn't allow us to go out on the Lake but the captain got into the channel and we got some nice sunset photos. It is a little pricey but we all enjoyed the cruise

We arrived right before the 7pm cruise, with a party of 13. Had talked to them on the phone and they said it would not be busy, so we took our chances as walkups! There were only four other customers so we basically had the whole boat to ourselves. We paid for upper-deck seats, but did go below (where it is heated) by the end to warm up. Crew was lovely. Captain did a nice job narrating, but it is a little hard to hear, so ask to be seated under a speaker if you want to hear everything. When visiting a town that is built on a waterway, I try to make sure to take a boat tour because it's like seeing the front of the house as opposed to the back door! The ride exposed me to lots of Saugatuck I would not have otherwise seen! It is pricey, so I was hesitant to give a large tip, which I normally do because I have a big family, and have upped my tipping game since the pandemic. Bring cash if you want drinks or snacks. Wear jackets and bring blankets as it can get cool and breezy. Slow and safe. Appropriate for all ages.

For starters, we like to plan ahead when on a trip and make reservations well in advance so we know that we will be able to do the things we want to do and won't have unexpected disappointments. This company however, will only sell same day tickets for their cruises, so you have no idea if you will be able to get tickets or not until that day. You also had to take time out of your traveling to stop and buy tickets.
They assigned seats to each party, but after take off everyone got up and moved to other tables that suited them better and no one was told to move back, so what was the point.
The strangest thing about this cruise, is that they will not let you board until a couple of minutes before the boat departs and will NOT sell any beverages, especially alcohol until after the boat departs. We have been on hundreds of cruises all over and have NEVER encountered such a ridiculous policy. Most boats want you to board half and hour before the cruise so they can sell you drinks. Do they not realize they are missing out on hundreds of dollars in sales before each cruise because they won't open the bar until after take-off?????????? Several other passengers besides myself were quite disappointed to not be able to get a drink when it was cocktail time. They have a VERY poor selection of beer and mostly carry local brands that no one wants. I decided to try the Bloody Mary as none of the other options appealed to me. Surprisingly, it was very good.
As far as the cruise goes, we spent more time on the inland lake than normal as the seas were too rough to take the boat out onto Lake Michigan, which was a disappointment and would have made for a better cruise. They need a better PA system. You could only hear half the commentary from the back of the boat.

Called for same day tickets. It was $58 a piece (even for kids) for a 90 minute ride. But, the sky was clear and no rain forecast, so we thought we'd splurge and take the sunset cruise. They told us to make sure to arrive early because they don't wait on people who are late. There was no parking anywhere close to the place, which was frustrating and they had no tourist maps of the area so we could figure out where to go prior to the cruise. Then they waited until the time the cruise was supposed to have departed to let us board.

By the time the cruise got underway, clouds rolled in and there was no sunset. It was also quite cold. So, we got hammered on the $34.00 gift shop blanket and whatever my husband paid for two hot chocolates on board.

There was no commentary on the sunset cruise. Just a trip down the river, turn around on the lake and back the same way we came. Almost everyone was huddled down on the lower deck where it was standing room only.

It's relaxing and scenic. The boat is immaculate, and drinks (including alcohol) are available on board. Snacks like chips, too. I wish I could hear the interesting narration, but that would take everyone on board buying into listening. That's not going to happen, as chatting and having fun is part of the experience. Personal earbuds or some kind of device to listen would be nice. We have taken this cruise every time we go to Saugatuck and have been fortunate enough to get out on Lake Michigan, which is weather dependent, every time.

The land based crew, the boat's captain & crew members, all thoroughly seem to enjoy not just their job, but interacting with all passengers boarding & de-boarding the vessel. They make sure everyone is comfortable and all needs are met with genuinely friendly smiles and politeness. A true delight in a functioning paddle boat touring the Kalamazoo River with a trip to the channel leading out to beautiful Lake Michigan. A terrific bang for your vacation or daytrip dollar!

Adorable paddle wheel boat that cruises the marina and lake area. Great taste of history. Unfortunately the lake is a no-wake zone so the boat cannot go very fast.

Very fun. Great trip with some narration but plenty of time to chat with friends and enjoy a cocktail. We sat on the upper deck in the afternoon and had a really pleasant time. Only thing to improve would be food availability in the ticketing office. It was closed. Also it was difficult to social distance but those of us concerned wore masks.

I really enjoyed this relaxing paddle boat cruise down the Kalamazoo River out into Lake Michigan. I went on the 12-noon outing. The weather was perfect. We were gone for the full 90 min. Captain provides a nice narration which most people didn't seem to listen to and was sometimes hard to hear. The crew is very friendly and helpful. Snacks/beverages seemed reasonably priced. I would highly recommend adding this to your stay in Saugatuck!
