Once we visited this park, we had officially visited all 5 Great Lakes...

...And this park immediately made Huron one of our favorites.

The water is so pretty and clean! I grew up on Lake Erie and lived on Lake Ontario for a little while, so I’m not used to seeing such bright blue-green water at a Great Lake. (Erie & Ontario are very brown)

Aside from a perfect Lake Huron experience, this is just a nice park in general. Plenty of places for kids to play (including playgrounds), hiking trails, and other activities.

All the facilities are in acceptable conditions and there weren’t very many people there when we were, which made it feel like we had the park to ourselves (on a Sunday!)...

There is a fee to get in. The ranger told us we could pay $9 and have access to ALL Michigan state parks, which of course we did.

We stayed 2 nights. Park is clean and covid safe. Because of covid they are not selling ice or firewood. Staff is friendly. Sites adjacent to the woods are definitely more private. There is a nice small playground. We were able to bike to the 40 mile lighthouse and saw the shipwreck there. Also biked to Roger’s city on beautiful paved path along the lake. Stopped at the bakery across the street but at this time they are mainly filling pre-orders.

Hoeft State Park is a hidden gem. I shouldn't even tell you about how awesome it is ;-) What's unique about this park is that it has large sand dunes, similar to those you'd find on Lake Michigan, but these are on Lake Huron. While the water level in 2019 was really high and the flat part of the beach was gone, the dunes still provide plenty of space to lay a towel.

The campground was recently upgraded in 2019 to provide individual electric poles for each site, as well as 50amp on some sites. The number of overall sites decreased by about 20 as the park combined smaller sites together to create sites that will accommodate the larger trailers and motorhomes many people have.

There is a nice new playscape for the kids, as well as a multi-sport play area. Those were provided by the Friends of the Park group. They also run a small camp store with camping items and souvenirs.

Right down the road is a cute bakery which you can ride your bike to or walk (there is a local paved path), or you van visit the nearby lighthouse. If you're up for it, drive into Rogers City and view the limestone mining operations.

Small (only 143 campsites), nice & quiet campground that is heavily wooded. Restrooms could use an upgrade, but I am there to camp, not hang out in the bathrooms/showers. the beach on Lake Huron is sandy with some rocks (as with most beaches on Lake Huron) and never busy. The sunrise over the lake is beautiful! Bring the bikes! there is a nice paved trail, about 5 miles, along the lake for walking or biking into Rogers City. Take the paved trail North out of the park and in about 2 miles you will be at the Forty Mile Point lighthouse which you can tour. there are also other nice trails inside the park, though they are not paved. We stayed @ campsite #35 which is very private & up on a hill with a lot of space.

This is a nice camp ground with lots of trees. It is usually pretty empty, except 4th of July. Even then, though it was full, it was quiet by 10pm.
The bathrooms are old. Like, 1970's old. But they are kept really clean. Only 2 showers for the whole camp, but since it's usually so empty it's not a big deal. Especially since so many people camp with trailers.
There is one mini cabin you can rent. No pets allowed in the cabin. We have rented it. Sometimes it's musty. We usually bring a fan and Lysol, spray and let it air.. all set. You can rent that 6 MO before you want- go to the Mi state park Web site.
The regular camp sites are good. Some are bigger than others. Try to get one backing the water. There are trees between the site and the water, but for most it's still just a short walk through to the beach.
The beach is beautiful. Lots of sand AND stones. Water is very clear and chilly. If you need bath water, it's not for you. But you'll surely enjoy the stone collecting. We like to beach down the street, where the water is right near the road. Short 50' walk from car to water. You can see your feet clearly when in up to your neck. Some spots have more rocks than others. Walk 20 feet and your beach changes a lot. We always bring water shoes anyway.
There's a really long paved bike trail that goes into town. It's a fun 30-40 minute ride. Easy for kids, no really big hills. The trail also goes north from camp, but that trail has some big hills. There's a cute lighthouse on the north route. The park rents bikes. Tandem ones too.
There's a bakery across the street from the park. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it. The cinnamon rolls and the 7 layer bars are my favorite. On 4th of July they had made 64 cinnamon rolls and they sold out in ten minutes. It's The Three Hearts bakery. ❤❤❤
There's wood for sale next to the bakery ($5/bundle) It's a dollar more than in the park, but we find its usually better, more dry, wood.
Rogers City is nothing spectacular. No souvenir shops. Just a small grocer and a dollar store. It's a bit like going back in time. I like it a lot though. None of the west side pretension. Ride your bikes down to the marina and check out the giant ship propeller and anchor. Then grab a Hudsonville ice cream cone at the concessions stand. $4 for a giant waffle cone. Then if you have enough energy, keep going to the limestone quarry. Again, it's just a bike ride, but it's relaxing and wonderfully low key. You won't see 56 half naked young people skate board by/ per hour like in Grand Haven. (Which is another Michigan town I love, despite that fact!)
If you lived in Michigan through the 1970's there's something about this town that will make you feel nostalgic.

We pulled in at 7:00 p.m. on Friday with a strong, yearning desire to rest and relax. Registration upon entering the park went smooth and easy with overjoyed, friendly smiles and waves. As we entered the campground, we were a bit disappointed to see there wasn't much separation from neighboring sites. I picked site # 8 when registering on line so we could be close to the beach access. It was also very close to the entrance of the park, bathrooms, vault toilet and kids playground. We inquired about changing to a site with a little more privacy, but after driving through the park, we decided to stay where we were assigned. Much to our surprise, we ended up being delighted in our stay while adapting to our surroundings with ease. Neighbors were all very nice and private, as well. The location was great for all of our needs. They even have rental bikes (built for 2) if you don't have your own. The paved biking trails are absolutely gorgeous! A beautiful full view w/ access to Lake Huron all along the way. We went into Rogers City (a must see) very quaint, heartwarming, enjoyable town. Now it's back to camp for a cold brew and a walk to the beach 200 ft. away. The sunsets are so breathtaking, it will instantly drop you to your knees in thankfulness for God's astounding creation. Showers were very clean and I had plenty of water. I showered at 4:00 p.m. after my hike & bike ride, so it wasn't crowded at all. Garbage containers are spaced adequately to provide easy access for all campers. The trees on the camp sites are spread out in various locations to allow for shade, but thicker between the rows allowing for a privacy barrier. It's mostly dirt ground, it helps to take a rug to wipe your feet before entering your tent or camper. I highly recommend this camping park to everyone. If you have children, they will be so delighted in their stay, as there is so much to keep them busy. Sand castles at the water's edge were also a big hit. To sum it up; you haven't camped at one of Michigan's top ten till you camp here.

I have been camping at this campground for about 9 years. Every year that I come here I don't want to leave. This is what a camp ground is supposed to be like. Lots of trees, beautiful beach and no big city distractions. There is so much to do swimming, biking and hiking if you get bored then you shouldn't camp.
-Some places to try 3 Heart Bakery. It's right across from the campground entrance. Their brownies and cinnamon rolls are AMAZING! You will have to hike after you have one of those babies!
-Light House Resturant has great pizza and cheese bread if you get sick of hot dogs
-International Sports Bar and Grill has a great hamburger and awesome soup

I camp here at least twice a year. The beach is second to none. Smaller campground, very quiet, mature trees. To be clear, you make your own fun here, no amenities and sparse staff. Sites are very generous inside, rustic and electric available. The beach side sites offer the wave sounds and glimses of water- none are actually waterfront.
Nice walking trails in park and park entrance meets great bike path. One direction you can ride into Rogers City, the other 40 Mile Point Lighthouse. Moderate endurance required.

This is one of the best campgrounds in Michigan in my opinion. The waters of Lake Huron are crystal clear and you can expect light crowds. I would recommend sites, 29, 31,32. Site 32 is th gem. All three of these site have direct beach access from the back of each site (most other site do not have this luxury) Very clean bathrooms and showers, they keep a schedule for cleaning so make note of when that is.

I am a single gal traveling alone with her puppy. We have done a tour of Michigan State Parks this last 2 weeks- so far: Sterling, Brighton, Orchard Beach, and Burt Lake. This one takes the cake! The sights are in the woods- and not one on top of another like the other parks. I finally feel like I am in the woods! Also- I search out dog friendly places for her to swim - and a 5 minute walk got me on to the shore of Lake Huron where she could run forever!! Saw maybe 10 other people the whole time. Beautiful beach, Huron is amazing! I just booked 2 more days for a total of 4...just b/c I love it here!
