About
With a history that dates back to 1863, Yates Grist Mill opened its doors beside the rapidly flowing waters of the 'then' Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal. By 1876, the Yates family installed a cider press into the existing water-powered process and began producing delicious Michigan cider. It then became known as Yates Cider Mill. Yates is one of the oldest, continually running businesses in Michigan. Come for a visit and be a part of what has made Yates Cider Mill a destination for generations.

I have been to Yates many times over the years and I have never been disappointed in the service, the quality of their products or the atmosphere. Don't get me wrong, the fall is prime time @ Yates and the lines can be long. My advice is to get there early on the weekends (before 10am) to give yourself the best shot at shorter lines or go during the weekdays.

This particular interaction with Yates involved sharing their goodness with friends and family out of state. I went to Yates' website to order Cider and Donuts shipped. The lead-time on my order's delivery was about a week to 10 days. In true Yates fashion, they delivered like all-stars!! The packages and contents were fresh and undamaged.

Well done!!!

They make it more than a place to buy cider. My son and his family were in town for a visit and their first stop was the Cider Mill. We arranged to meet them there and since there are several parking lots, we called and found they were "near the goats." I didin't even know there were goats there, but the grandkids loved feeding them. There is always a lot of auto traffic and their parking lots are usually full. They have tents selling things like fudge and pumpkins. There are places for kids to play, visit-friendly tents and picnic tables and a couple rivers that supply the water wheel and provide places for kids to play.

We all know how amazing Yates’ cider and donuts are, but I wanted to share my story about the people. Last Wednesday, on Halloween, I stopped by Yates to pick up a large order for my office. To set the scene, I was in costume with my hair done up and a huge layered skirt and it was pouring rain. After the staff loaded up my car, I went to leave only to find that my keys were no where to be found. You can imagine my panic! I jumped back out and frantically search my seat, the trunk, everywhere. The two gentlemen who had helped load my car, saw me and asked if something was wrong. I explained my predicament, and they immediately started helping me search my vehicle... in the rain. One of them even laid on the cold cement to look under my car. After probably 10 minutes, one of them had found my keys. Thank goodness! They did not need to help, and yet, they selflessly assisted me. What a wonderful place. Go to Yates.

Go early if you can- like after breakfast- or the parking gets full and the line gets long.

On our last visit we managed to find a park and get through the line quickly. The donuts were fresh and still warm and the cold cider was spot on. I was not a fan however of the hot cider- it had an odd taste. If your looking for a hot drink, I might try the coffee.

Take a few extra minutes to walk the path/trail along the creek while your there- it will greatly enhance your experience.

A fall favorite that won't disappoint.

We went this weekend because we wanted to check out the history of the mill. It was so packed with families and kids we could barely move. It’s great for them because they are selling cider like crazy but otherwise I’d just avoid and go in the off season.

Made a stop at the historic Yates Cider Mill in Rochester Hills on a summer’s evening. Sampled some of its specialty jams and preserves, making some purchases to bring home the goodness. Then, of course, there were the warm donuts and cider that reminded us autumn’s bounty will soon be upon us. There’s an ice cream shop for those visitors holding onto summer. Long, daily hours good for busy schedules.

There’s nothing like warm, homemade donuts and fresh apple cider when it starts to turn cold out, and this place fits the bill. They usually have a lot of entertaining kids activities, too. Great family fun!
