About
From rare and historic to inspiring artwork and exhibits, there's always something new to discover at the Air Zoo. The Air Zoo is a world-class, Smithsonian-affiliated aerospace and science museum with over 100 air and space artifacts, inspiring interactive exhibits, full-motion flight simulators, indoor amusement park rides, a theater and over 100 education programs! Spend the day exploring aviation, engineering, science, technology, math and art in both of the exciting and unique Flight Centers. Make sure to take the shuttle to the Flight Discovery Center where visitors have the opportunity to climb in training cockpits, geek out over the intricacies of aerospace technology and engines, and see a nationally recognized restoration program! Volunteers are busy, 7 days a week, restoring two WWII aircraft recovered from the bottom Lake Michigan. It's a must see! Both centers are included in admission and are open 360+ days a year. Come imagine, explore and discover at the Air Zoo!

Superb exhibits, imaginatively presented: can't-miss restoration facility
Oct 2021
The variety of aircraft, superb restorations, and the supporting materials are all top-notch. Unusual or unique exhibits include a Curtiss XP-55 and a Cirrus VK-30. There seem to be a lot of interactive exhibits and videos for kids, and frequent STEM events. The new facility is beautifully done, but don't miss the original building close by, which is now the Restoration & Flight Discovery Center. Where else can you walk among restorations in progress and talk to the volunteers at length. On my visit, Ken and Terri were most welcoming and I learned a lot. Both SR-71 engines are on display separately, and the CG-4A glider is presented as towed by a C-47 (with good documentation about where the gliders were built in Michigan. Overall, the displays are quite imaginative.
The Cafe (check the hours) is under-staffed but the food was excellent.

Great place to visit with kids!

Fantastic place to spend a morning or afternoon! We were visiting family in Portage and made a stop here with our 2.5 year old and her cousins (6 & 8 yo)…they all had a wonderful time. Very clean & covid-friendly. Especially enjoyed the indoor rides, Pixar short-film about the moon landing, and lots of airplanes and space-shuttle stuff to see. Really enjoyed and will go back!

Well worth the Time
Aug 2021
Our group of 4 adults loved this place. We have been to many Air museums, not our first. Loved the space shuttle/lab exhibits showing astronauts’ personal spaces. Good mix of planes. Signage was top notch. Volunteer Denny in the Flight Discovery Center made our visit extra special with his talks on restoration of the Dauntless and the F117. We even took a ride in the balloons.

A fun visit
Jul 2021 • Family
To be a 5 everything has to be perfection. Maybe 1 out of 20 activities make the grade. To be a 4 everything has to be exceptional.

The air zoo is a solid 4. Plan on spending 3 hours. No more than 4.

The museum is bigger than a lot and has planes from every Era. So why a 4. Lack of signage. Each object could have a storey to go with it.

As an aviation buff this visit was a must as I was in the area. It did not dissapoint. It has something for everybody. A good way to spend an afternoon. Very educational if you have kids but I went to see the planes.

Pleasantly Surprised
Jun 2021
We were looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon and came across this Museum. What a pleasant surprise. We spent around 2-3 hours walking thru the Flight Innovation Center. One of the members of our group was a Vietnam Vet and some of the aircraft on display really interested him. The display recounting the WWII 6-month battle of Guadalcanal and Henderson Field was very informative and sobering.

The restoration work being done at the Flight Discovery Center was also informative and it would have been interesting to see the volunteers at work during the week.

One of the best museum that I have seen in my life!
May 2021
As an active world traveler, I have seen many museums. Beside the Museum of Gold in Bogota, Air Zoo is on the top of the list of the best museums I have seen so far. This is a must to go place for any plane enthusiast! Yet, even those, who cannot say that aircrafts are their hobby, should be able to find this museum very interesting. If you go there, you will be able to see many historical artifacts. To me, it was interesting to see Japanese Army Katana sword, Willys Jeep from 2nd World War, famous C-47, or Cobra AH-1J helikopter. I was very surprised to see a container, in which NASA sent a chimpanzee into Earth orbit. I was also surprised to see some incredible Soviet jets, such as Mig-15 and Mig-21. Of course, the best two exhibits are legendary aircrafts made by Lockheed: SR-71 Blackbird and F-117 Nighthawk. Jaw dropping experience! Must see! Strongly & highly recommended! :-)

Great place to visit
Apr 2021 • Family
It took a little more than 2 hours to get here but it was a nice journey. The sun was out and shining brightly.

Once there, we were asked if we were over 60 and if we were veterans.⅝ To that we answered yes and provided proof. We were given 2 different discounts towards our tickets.

The place is fantastic even if you were not in the military. Just to see the air power that we started with and to know where we are today is astounding.

Great find
Mar 2021
Had never heard of the place before, but my sister-in-law recommended it, and she was right. Great collection of aircraft and other artifacts. Most of the "rides" were shut down due to COVID, so can't speak to those. The amazing thing about the place is the general "atmosphere" of the place. In particular, the mural that wraps around the entire main exhibit space and across the floor is stunning. It just ties the whole place together. Only disappointment was the gift shop. Don't think they had a single book for sale.
