About
We offer family-friendly public horseback riding for ages 3 and up. We have rides that are 1 hour or 1.5 hour and we are open May - October each year. We also offer therapeutic riding for persons with disabilities which runs year-round. We were formerly called Rainbow Ranch and have been owned and operated by the same family since 1949. Stony Lake Stables is bringing a bit of the old west right here to West Michigan...

My husband and I were visiting Silver Lake, MI for a getaway and a friend of our who had just been up there for a visit suggested this place. She said her family of four had a great time. So, I got online and I booked us a one hour trail ride. We got there early, like suggested. They have a nice ranch going. You could purchase cups of horse treats to feed the horses for 50 cents a cup. They had bathrooms and were very friendly. They picked out Bess for me and Bullet for my husband. Our tour guide was Ella and I can't remember her horses name! She was so very friendly and informative. She knew every answer the questions we asked her and was very attentive. We will for sure be back and will be bringing our kids along too!

Best part of our trip! The staff was so friendly upon arrival. Instructions were clear and the trail ride was a great time. My young kids were guided by the lead wrangler, Delaney, sting they loved. They talked non stop and she entertained them the whole way, giving me the only hour in six years that I’ve not heard mommy mommy mommy a million times. Thanks for the great time. We will be back next summer!

Beautiful, shaded trails and gentle horses made us all feel at ease on our one hour ride. The guide rode along side our 7 year old and did such an amazing job engaging with him- he ended up talking her ear off. Our 11 year old had a great time as well. Perfect family activity when you need a break from the beach!

Absolutely the best place to go for a lovely and relaxing trail ride. I took my family- kids 5,7 and 10 on the one hour trail ride. My two youngest had never been on a horse before and were apprehensive. The wranglers were excellent at being kind and gentle with them while getting them on the ponies. The wrangler then held the ropes to their two ponies with her riding in the middle on her own horse for the whole trail. My 10 year old and I followed behind them on our horses. My kids loved it and can’t wait to go back. This stable is extremely well kept, the horses well cared for and well trained. Could not have been a better first experience for my youngest two. We will definitely be back. We were vacationing in Manistee and the hour drive was pleasant and not a problem.

Our whole family signed up for an hour long trail ride on Stony Lake Stable's website and our experience was AMAZING!!!
The staff was obviously very busy on our arrival, but they were attentive, extremely nice and very hard working.
Our ride was led by Brandy and we also had another employee with two of the smaller children. Brandy was very personable and memorized all of the names of the kids on our ride and engaged in conversations with them during our entire ride between teaching us what to do on the trail. She made the experience so much fun for the kids who started off a little nervous.
The horses are all very well cared for and so kind and a huge perk was seeing all of the deer in the fields/forests along the trails - we had no idea that Stony Lake Stables also has deer on their farm!
I would highly recommend going to Stony Lake Stables if you are in the area....I didn't want to leave and could have gone on the trails over and over!
Also, be sure to wear close-toed shoes, pay the $1.00 to feed your horse after the ride and tip the hard-working staff after your ride is over. They absolutely deserve it.

Great Trail Ride through the western MI Landscape! Our wrangler was excellent keeping everyone together and in line. The horses are well mannered, and used to the trail ride, so they pretty much take you for the ride without much input from the rider.
Found out I am allergic to horse dander, which made for an interesting 90 minutes, but the smiles on the kids faces made the allergic reaction well worth the discomfort.
You will not be disappointed with a ride booked at Stoney Lake Stables

Stony Lake Stables was amazing! I thought they were extremely organized and accommodating and had a system down that made me feel at ease. I appreciated they gave me time to take pictures of my daughter on her horse. I also was extremely impressed with a girl Harriet an experienced rider who led our group and took my 6 year old under her wing to tell her jokes and make her comfortable when she was nervous. She really made our day and no matter what she does in life whether it’s with horses or something else she will go on to do amazing things! As we left the first thing my daughter said was, “when can we go again?”, which is great because she didn’t say much the whole time so I wasn’t sure if she liked it at first. :)

We had the absolute best experience at Stony Lake Stables. We were able to get in pretty last minute and the staff was incredibly accommodating. The trail was beautiful, guides were friendly and knowledgeable. Our 8-year old son and 6-year old daughter loved every minute and it was worth every penny.

This was my first time riding a horse and it was amazing! It was the best experience ever and I would recommend anyone and everyone to take a day and come here to horseback ride. These horses or super well trained, and obedient. Then the staff were so kind and welcoming. They made sure everyone was together and that everyone was enjoying it. Definitely was peaceful as you go through the forest, it is an experience you do not want to miss. I will for sure be coming back again next year!

We had a great time with our group of 5 riders: 2 grandparents and 3 grandkids:3, 5 and 8. The staff were friendly and kind and the horses well trained and cared for. They have 76 horses and take groups of 7 - 13 out 5 times/day in the summer. The hour long route goes thru a wooded deer preserve and we saw about 20 deer in several groups including 4 buck with big racks. The 3 year old boy rode with me (66 yo grandpa) and the 5 yo girl rode alone with a wrangler holding her reins. Our 8 yo got to led the pack and they all loved it!
FYI there’s a nice country store just up the road with a huge amusement park. We stopped there afterwards for lunch and treats. (Lewis adventure Farm). The admission to the park is kind of pricey but the store is free.

Hi, Beth. Not sure I can give a perfect answer to your questions, but I will tell you my experience,
I was only at Rainbow Ranch once. I have owned my own horses so using a riding facility wasn't necessary until recently as I sold my horse a few years ago, My grandchildren were coming in town from Cleveland and one of the things they really wanted to do was go horseback riding. I looked online, as well as, called lesson facilities that might offer something. There aren't many places doing trail rides anymore, I settled on Rainbow Ranch because it has been in operation for many years and seems to have a good reputation,
If you check my previous review, you will find more in depth information about our ride. But, to briefly answer your question.
I would recommend Rainbow Ranch and would go again, They did a nice job and the horses were safe. The trails were pretty and the guide very personable. The only negative I have to say was the amount of trotting we did on our walk trot ride. Due to various riding abilities, I thought the walk/trot ride would be the best option. The pony my youngest grandson was on needed a crop to encourage him. My grandson had no clue about the fine points of crop encouragement, so his pony didn't move out and because he was right behind the guide, the rest of us didn't get to trot much. We requested additional trotting and there were ample areas on the trail that we could have done so, but the guide did not honor those requests. Other than that, we had a wonderful time. You are encouraged to interact with the horses while waiting for your ride to leave and when you return. All in all, we had a great time.
If you Google Rainbow Ranch in New Era, you will find driving instructions,
I am not sure which way to answer your last question as to other places in the state. Are you strictly referring to riding facilities or places of interest in general? I only know of Rainbow Ranch and JJ Resort that offers trail rides locally. There may be others in the state if you check online. Mackinac Island is a horse lovers dream. No motor vehicles are allowed on the island making it a mecca for equestrians. As to other activities, Michigan has may opportunities for enjoying every season. Locally, in the Muskegon/Grand Haven/Grand Rapids area we have numerous museums, beaches, Meijer Garden, Country Dairy, Lewis Farms, Michigan Adventure, Sports Complex, ice arenas, more restaurants than you can count, Silversides submarine, fishing charters, downhill and cross-country skiing, luge run, bike trails, various musical festivals, Broadway quality theaters and many other wonderful possibilities to fulfill any and all activities your heart desires..
Hope this helped, Beth. If you are from out of state, welcome to Michigan! We truly have a beautiful state with so much to see and do. There is a season and something for everyone here.

I am interested in giving trail rides and/or lessons as a gift to the children of a friend in Traverse City. What are the prices of rides and lessons? How far away is Traverse City? Do you give gift certificates?
