Great little museum
Aug 2020
Due to Covid 19 the ancient manuscripts were not on display, but this was reflected in a much reduced entrance price. There was still a lot to see and lots of information to read and understand.

Remarkable display and history of the manuscripts from Mont St. Michel
Nov 2019 • Friends
A bit off the beaten path, but well-worth a visit after you have toured the Mont Saint Michel. They will even give you a discounted ticket if you show them your Mont Saint Michel ticket. The museum takes about an hour with the very helpful audio guide to hear and learn about the life of a scribe, the art and processes used, and an amazing display of the earliest manuscripts. Not crowded at all...we were there at 4:30 on a Thursday.

Not to be missed

This museum is one of the best in France we have visited. Really enjoyed being in the majestic building itself, the design of which drew you in. The explanatory films, the interactive computer screens which enable you to further explore the design, development and fabrication of the beautiful manuscripts we're a high light, especially as the ancient manuscripts were unavailable for viewing at the time of our visit. More English language signage would be helpful. Check the opening hours, the French seem unable to work through 'lunchtime', a frustrating part of the culture, and in October the museum was only open in the afternoon.

Dramatic exhibition space
Sep 2019 • Couples
A wonderful exhibition of treasures from Le Mont Saint Michel housed in an elegant and imaginative modern space developed with the ruins of the old castle. The exhibition is beautifully presented with informative labelling in French and English and illustrated with many beautiful short films. Highly recommended!

It's historical very special to realise where you are but unfortunately you see an immense small amount of the books. WHY so few? A lot of children activities!
And a nice museum shop, very friendly staff!

1000 year old manuscripts!
Jul 2019 • Couples
Excellent well thought out museum which compliments a visit to Mont St Michel. Would suggest perhaps visiting Avranches and the Scriptorium before going to Mont St Michel- particularly if the history of the site interests you. Our French is reasonable but would definitely recommend getting the audio guides in English to really appreciate the exhibit. The manuscripts are at the end of the tour and cannot be displayed for long in order to protect them. So, what you see is really pot luck as they are rotated. But amazing nonetheless. Some look like they were written yesterday!

Fabulous museum

We love this modern museum and the architecture is also very stylish. The exhibition covers a lot about how illustrated manuscripts are made and allows you to see modern vellum and ink.

Audio guide recommended

Fascinating history of the area, and of course the ancient manuscripts are always a treat.
Apr 2019
This museum has audio-guides in many languages, but if you can understand French, it is good just to read all the inscriptions. Don't forget to go into the little side cinema to watch the fascinating accounts of making manuscripts, binding ancient books, to name just a couple of the many short (around 5minute) videos on constantly. Some really ancient artifacts in the first hall - statuettes and coins from over 2000 years ago, and for those who know the area, a very interesting glimpse into the past of the whole area of the bay, and Normandy - with its first inhabitants, whose tribe name, I can never remember (Abrincotes or something like that!) It does close for 2 hours over lunch and isn't always open in the mornings, so do check the website before being disappointed.

Good if you're in the area

Very well layed-out exhibit, but mostly concentrating on paper and ink production. About 15 manuscripts are on display at any one time, with rotation occurring. We were more impressed by the beautiful script in the manuscripts than by the illuminations. However, hi-tech interactive manuscript magnification stations let you pick from a large number of illuminations and blow them up for study; this was more impressive than viewing the actual non-magnified manuscripts on display, I thought.

A very rich museum of ancient manuscripts
Jul 2018 • Solo
The museum is impressively rich. The first part of the museum tells the story of Mont St Michel, its origins, its foundation, its everyday life, the pilgrimages and the monastery as a center where monks copied and saved hundreds of latin and greeks books. The second part of museum is dedicated to the medieval manuscripts: the natural inks used by monks, the different styles of handwriting, the treatment of parchments, the bindings, the contents of the Mont St Michel library. There are some short films about it.
At the end of the visit, 15 ancient manuscipts are displayed under controlled atmosphere and temperature in a dark room, they are simply great.
Consider to spend 2 hours in this excellent museum.
