We visited with our 7 year old who loves history. Great walk around the ramparts, amazing views and lots of fun imagining how things would have been during the time this impressive citadel was built.

My 16 year old, my sister and I spent 2 hours roaming the historic and scenic citadel in the region of Aquitaine. Parking is great, admission is free and the views are phenomenal. I would suggest doing some online research before going - the descriptions are not the best on site! There is a campsite and hotel as well as... More

Interesting tour of the mostly well-preserved fortress which gives you a good idea of the design concepts of this type of structure and application to its particular placement. Some nice shops in the interior. Note: Lots of shops in the town proper are closed on Sunday and Monday.

This is a grand scale fortification, illustrating the importance of trade by its sheer scale, yet lovingly restored for modern use. Walk around the walls on turf and cobbled paths, look out over both country and estuary, read up on the history of Bordeaux and the importance of Blaye, and in typical French fashion, the citadel now houses restaurants, bars... visited in 2015 for Bastille day what a fantastic firework display fired from the walls of the citadel and a great atmosphere felt very welcoming locals and some great entertainment in the days leading up to the 14th with show jumping in the citadel and plenty of great food available

We stayed at this hotel (to recuperate after a road accident en route to Bordeaux) and the Manager and his team looked after us very well indeed. They made sure that we wanted for nothing and nothing we asked of them was too much trouble. The hotel is a real find - it is set in an old historic walled... More

This is an amazing and beautiful location. As Americans we are largely clueless about history and strategy of war and defense. At the Citadel, one can see the brilliance of those in charge as they chose and developed locations for optimal holdings. Moats, walls, murder holes are some of the methods employed. The setting is serene and one can hardly... More

This was an amazing campsite (good value too) to stay in. The sunset was amazing over the estuary, and the camping very good value! There wasn't a lot to do in the town in the evenings - but was a great stopover on the way through. Would recommend. The campsite owner didn't speak any English however! But minimal French was... The famous military architect, Marquis de Vauban planned and built the military complex that is the town of Blaye, located on the right bank of the Gironde estuary, 56 km from Bordeaux. Blaye was a important military stronghold during the French wars of Religion and wars against the English. The Citadel was built on the ruins of an ancient Gothic... More
