If planning a day out in downtown Muskegon, I recommend you start with this terrific regional museum. Parking is free and plentiful. The museum is free only for Muskegon and local county residents. For others, the entrance is $4 for adults. It's worth the money.

There are exhibits on the human and geologic history of Michigan as well as Muskegon. Exhibits are well prepared and have lots of hands on features for kids. There is a large kids workshop with activities, science related but kid sized exhibits that will fascinate adults too, and a wildlife room with lots of hidden animals for the family to look for. You will spend more time here than you think you will.

There is a small gift shop and rest rooms and the museum occupies two floors. The person at the front desk will also tell you about other related attractions nearby. Within a short walk or drive is the Hackley and Hume mansions, well worth a visit (also not free), the fire barn and depression era house (free), and other local sights. Combining a visit here with the LST 393, the Hackley and Hume, and other attractions can easily fill a terrific day out and parking is free everywhere.

This place is amazing. It’s always putting on different events for kids surround STEM and history. Local residents are free and non-residents are only a few bucks. Well worth the time.

First things first, this is free for Muskegon residents and residents of the county. All others, there is a $4 entrance charge. This was not clear from the reviews and even from the signage.

That said, we really enjoyed it and were happy to have stopped by. The museum is a bit of everything science center, art museum (a special exhibit from a local artist's work during WWII, excellently done), history center and children's museum. We spent more time than we thought we would, learned more than we ever expected and had a great time. Definitely worth the money!

Not bad as long as you consider that this is stricktly a local museum. Some stuff for kids to do and a lot of hand-on things.

This museum isn't overly big, but it is packed full of great things to see and do. From a science lab with lots of hands on activities, to a room where kids can learn about healthy eating, a whole area covering the glacier movements in Michigan, and the animals that are native here. So much great information! It took us a couple of hours to walk around every area, we probably could have spent more if we sat to watch the videos that were available.
We really enjoyed our tour. The staff is super friendly and helpful.

Guides at the firehouse and home reflecting the depression era really make small children feel welcome. There are a number of activities including play food in the kitchen, dress up clothing and firehouse bucket brigade to entertain younger children. The displays for adults are informative. Understanding the history of firefighting including a film form 1905 illustrates many of the limitations and ingenuity of the times. This was a free exhibit, perfect for a rainy day.

Free is a travelers favorite word. This museum doesn't disappoint because of it either. Lots of local Muskegon artifacts and interactive displays meant we had a great break from the heat. I would definitely go back seeing as they change some exhibits around and to just learn even more.

Out for a walk after farmers market and decided to stop in. The woman who met us was very enthusiastic a d gave us a brief over view. The museum had very nice display about the last 200 years of Muskegon lake. Very interesting regarding mans imoacts and the lake has lost about 25% of its surface area.
