Nestled into the surrounding historic neighborhood, this fire museum in a reproduction fire hall building is quite the place. I roamed around the first floor enjoying the exhibits and the fire truck. My husband looked at all the exhibits, watched the videos, talked with the staffer, and went upstairs to see where the fireman "lived" while on duty. Totally enjoyed it!! And it was free as part of our admission to the Hackley-Hume House tour. Admission limited to 6 people at a time; masks required.

Oy reviewing based off viewing the outside. I'd love to come back and actually tour it one day, which is free during certain hours. I love the fact that this house and the one next door are historical buildings in this part of town, and that tours are free. Parking is free also, along the street.

Lots of great old photos. Good displays. Included in our ticket for the Hackley and Hume Homes. Just takes a few minutes but interesting, especially since we grew up in Muskegon.

Lots of cool information. It's amazing how they used to fight fires and the peril the firefighters put themselves in with the equipment they had a the time. They have some well preserved displays that take you back thru the years.

Why is it called a fire barn? In a time before motor vehicles, horses were used to pull the fire fighting equipment. As a visitor you can explore two floors filled with antique fire fighting equipment and see the stalls where the horses were kept on the ready. The attendant will give you a quick guided tour and tell you how the horses were trained. Because horses are smarter than today's trucks, the equipment could be ready to go in less than a minute because the horses knew what to do.

Upstairs, you can visit the area where the firemen (and women) lived while on duty. There are also exhibits on the history of fires in Muskegon, and some artifacts. Moderately interesting for the average adult, boring for kids. You can't slide down the pole, not that this should surprise you.

The museum will only take about 20 minutes or so to visit. Parking is free, and so is the museum. While you're here, be sure to visit the Scolnik House of the Depression Era located next door. It's also free, and a little more interesting for kids.
