I did both the sunset hike to Telica and the volcano boarding. The sunset hike was incredibly well organized, the guide Josh did a great job and was incredibly well informed about the area. I also appreciated that when he took a break he made sure those at the end of the line had some time to rest as well. We were able to enjoy some fresh fruit on the side of the volcano where it seemed like we were the only people around. The views really were magnificent. The volcano boarding was wonderful as well. There unlike the other companies we were able to go boarding twice, although the hike up stopped many people from going again. We were also one of the few companies that let you carry the board using your backpack, which makes it SO MUCH easier, especially when the hike is a bit more strenuous. The guides there were also very well prepared and made me feel much better when I saw how steep the volcano appeared to be. I really can't say enough good things! A very wonderful experience

I can’t rate this tour company highly enough. We did the El Hoyo 2 days hiking combined with Cerro Negro and it was incredibly well organised. The guides are knowledgeable and friendly, and go the extra miles to ensure you are taking adequate breaks, drinking water and well fed during the hike. We camped overnight on top of the volcano and they whipped up hot veggie pasta in no time, it was delicious! better than most meals I’ve had in Nicaragua. The other people staying in the same camp (but touring with another company) were jealous with their cold tacos. I also felt like we had a nice amount of time to enjoy the sunrise, and eat a good breakfast before setting off the next day. The other group were up and gone before we were out of our tent. Later in the day, we met up with them at the lake, and again had the advantage of lunch cooked by our girls whilst they set off to hike towards home. We had 1 hour relaxing / swimming at the lake and were picked up with an air conditioned vehicle (god send!) at the top of the lake crater. At this point, after 2 days hiking and a chance to wash all the dirt off in a lake - you do not want to do any more walking! We drove past the other group 3/4Km down the Rd looking very hot sweaty, dirty, tired and pissed off. I highly, highly recommend booking with Quetzaltrekkers and not anyone else!

Top tips - take a travel pillow if you can. It’s not very comfortable sleeping on just a thin matt but this makes a difference. Baby wipes are also good to take as there is no water at the top to wash and you get very dirty/sweaty. Also, you wouldn’t believe it given the hot weather in Leon, but it gets cold on top of the Volcano when the sun goes in. Take a hoodie or jumper and leggings / trousers.

We had a perfect experience with Quetzaltrekkers. We left Leon around 8 AM and we got to Cerro Negro after one hour drive and a short stop at the fruit market. After the boarding they have offered us local fruits as a snack and then we did another boarding session. Staff is very helpful and they will explain you everything. You get some extraordinary views up there and you will be able to see an active crater as well. Quetzaltrekkers is the only agency that allows you to board twice. The price was 30$ each, and it is probably the cheapest tour you can find. The good thing is that most of this money will go to kids in Nicaragua instead of travel agencies making profit. Also at the end we have received very nice T-Shirts with Quetzaltrekkers. It worth to travel to Nicaragua for this experience.

I did the el Hoyo hike that lasts 2 days and I couldn’t have imagined a more beautiful hike than this one. The guides we had where 2 super nice volunteers that provided us with interesting facts and information on the way and made sure the hike was in a reasonable tempo. The scenery was unbelievable beautiful throughout the entire hike. The sunset and sunrise are magical and the dip in the vulcano lagoon was the best motivation in the heat. I definitely recommend quetzaltrekkers as an organisation especially because you, with the hike, are contributing the kids.
Thank you so much and keep up the good work!!!

Awesome tour. The downhill is quite exciting, but I like the view on the volcano more! It's awesome to see the volcano chain in Nicaragua and the terrain of Cerro Negro, like walking on the moon! The guides provided a safe environment and instruction, they let us do it twice! But the second time is slower due to the "anti-friction" layer under the board was ran out. They also provide local fruit and all the equipment and pre-tour briefing. The most important thing is that they donate part of their profit to local education.

I did the two day overnight hike to el Hoyo with Quetzaltrekkers and loved every minute of it. For 10 dollars extra you can also go volcano boarding which was really nice. After that you hike 1,5 hour up and then flat before you reach the camp site. The views are breathtaking. The second day you hike 3-4 hours down to a lake where you can swim. The equipment Quetzaltrekkers provided was of good quality. Food was really good. But most importantly, the guides Will and Heather were really amazing. They were friendly, positive and knowledgable about the surroundings. QT was also very accommodating in my wish to be dropped off at the bus terminal at the end. Definitely recommend!!!!

Super nice people. They are a non profit so all money goes to charity. I did the Telica one day hike and the vulcano boarding. Guides were super responsible and conscious of the group needs so that no one would stay behind. They provided a really nice sandwich and Josh, the guide, also took an entire watermelon and mandarins to the top. I felt very safe and had an amazing experience. All that while helping the local community.

The Hike up to the Volcano was very difficult but also really nice. The view on the top was totally worth it, seeing the crater during sunset and sunrise was magical! The overnight trip was well organized and the guides told us interesting things during the trip. Thank you for that experience, I would go with Quezaltrekkers again!

There are several companies in León offering volcano boarding for the same price, but I specifically chose Quetzaltrekkers knowing the proceeds were going towards supporting disadvantaged youth in León, and am so glad I did. Everyone we encountered from the organisation was lovely and the whole process was smooth. It was a super windy day, making the hike up a bit more challenging. Seeing us struggling, one of the guides helped with our boards. The views at the top are great and the volcano boarding itself was a fun, unique experience. They provide everything you need. Took a while to wash all of the ash and dirt out of my hair but I have positive lifelong memories from this experience. Thank you, Quetzaltrekkers

Our group hiked up Mount Telica to view the crater and watch the sunset. Our guide was kind and patient as one of our group was older and had to move a little bit slower at times, especially on the way down. Our transportation to the site was in a Range River with benches in the back, and beware it’s a bumpy ride all the way. I’d recommend this trek to anyone in decent physical shape. If you do the trip however, make sure to bring your own basic first aid kit in case of slips or falls.
