Quiet beach

Las penitas is beautiful and peaceful. If you're looking for a beach With night life and parties, San Juan Del Sur is your place.

It's close to Leon and good for a few beers. Other than that the surf is terrible in comparison to other spots in Nicaragua and the beaches themselves are nothing special. If you have time to head to other beaches instead, I would.

I took the bus from the Subtiava market to Poneloya (12.5 Cordobas - 20km about 1/2hr) and got off at the far end of Poneloya. (if you don't want to get off in Poneloya just stay on the bus and then it goes to Las Peñitas) I walked down to the beach and then just followed it to the rocky... More

Beautiful beaches and places to hike around the area that were amazing. One of the beaches was covered in shells, literally.

To get there from Leon you need to go to the mercadito in the Subtiava neighborhood. Buses to Poneloya and Las Penitas leave from the market. Poneloya is an even smaller beach/fishing town down from Las Penitas. The bus goes to Poneloya first. It will turn around and go back the same road then turn off at the road that... More

I was a bit disappointed when entering this beach. I hoped to be able to go into the water to cool down, needed because of the 36 degrees in the air. But the waves were way to big.. might be this time a year though!

It is cheap and easy to get to from Leon but the waves were so strong and the beach was so deserted it didn't feel a safe place to go in the sea but the shells on the beach were incredible!

Had nice refreshing play time in the warm water and waves. The children could have spent all day every day here. The beach restaurant served great fish and a nice place to watch the water play and sip an ice cold beer.

We spent the day at Big Foot backpackers and hung out at the pool area, as the sand on the beach is way to hot to lay on. There is quite a current, so swimming is not the easiest to do - but I guess it depends on when you go. It was anyhow a great day, and from 4... More
