This is the mountain pass you must cross if driving from Samarkand to Shahrisabz. It's the same one that forced Amir Temur to be buried in Samarkand instead in Shah, as it was covered with heavy snow.
One day excursion to Shahrisabz is very popular, and after doing it I can say worth it, however lower your expectations - don't expect Samarkand or Bukhara there.
Although the distance is less than 100 km, driving time is 2 to 2,5 hours. Road is pretty bad - bumpy with potholes, somewhere not paved.
Saying that, I certainly DO NOT advise renting a car and driving yourself (the thing I do always recommend). Instead, take a tour. Don't bother searching online and overpay via online tours and providers - just ask at your reception, they will organize it for you.
To have a clue we paid 70$ for two of us (around 63 Euros) while on online agencies it was 50-55 Euros per person. We were driven in a brand new Kia Sportage with an English speaking guy who stopped where was interesting and where we asked.
Along the route are 4-5 interesting places to stop - one with natural rock formations, another spot at the peak where's a marketplace, one after passing the mountain range with great views of mountains and Shahrisabz valley and several famous restaurants (specially one with enormous crowds), though we didn't like the food.
