This was the highlight of the 12 day trek and that is saying something as the whole EBC trek was amazing. The views of Everest, surrounding mountains and Khumba Glacier were simply incredible. At 5440m it is a bit of a climb but I can't recommend it highly enough. If you have an option go at sunset (bring a torch to get back) as Everest has a brilliant orange glow to it, whereas at sunrise you just have the sun in your eyes. We only got half way up but still good.

The best place to see everything you wish on the way to EBC. The views are spectacular and the trek up to the peak is worth the effort. Bring warm clothes and gloves no matter what, as the peak is a cold place to be. My preference is to do EBC during the day and Kala Patthar at dawn. Walking poles will assist you no matter what so it's worth the effort having them. The only downside to Kala Patthar is the fact that Gorak Shep has only one real Hostel and it is a 'Kip'. Beware of the water situation as again a lot of peope have suffered as a result of the lack of quality this year.

Next day trek was also difficult in snow fall for 3rd time to reach Lobuche(4910m). Climbing over boulders and crossing glacial streams. At the top of the hill, there are numerous memorials and mani wheels for climbers who’ve lost their lives on Everest. Now started to feel low oxygen and low atmospheric pressure in the body. the fact that I knew next day finally going to Everest Base Camp was excellent motivation! and on that moment did not want to get high altitude sickness like fellow trekkers. Every 10 minute a chopper was hovering to lift them back for medical aid. It was very disheartening for them as their attempt was aborted after reaching so close. By the time it started to realize that there will be low visibility also at EBC when I will reach there. Luckily next morning was sunny and reached Gorakshep by 9AM after 3 hr of trek. I skipped the lunch here and headed directly to EBC 5 km (3 hr) ahead to avoid any weather uncertainty. Reached the EBC milestone (5360 m) covered with so many flags and met the Everest summiteers staying in nearby camps atop the glacier. Also saw the majestic view of Kumbhu Icefalls with a route to Mt Everest summit. Returned to Gorakshep for night halt. Next morning 4 am I had to start for Kala Pathar (5625m) but was not having courage to go up in minus 20C temperature. So waited outside and saw clear view of the Milky Way and passing meteors in the night sky and delayed the trek till 5:30AM. I managed the cold with the art of layering with only having windcheater and no heavy jacket to carry. You can add one layer of cloth for each 1000 meter so Above 5000 meter you must be in 5 layers. In hurry or lack of oxygen in my brain, I forgot to take energy bars. The water bottle was already frozen. I thought 2-3 times to give up that vertical climb with pace of 3 breaths a step without food and already skipped dinner last day as altitude was messing with my taste buds too. I was even ready to beg for food from fellow trekkers if someone had crossed me. But looking at my condition one Brazilian trekker who already gave up the climb offered me his chocolate bar. I am grateful to him for the gesture. I was constantly monitoring my pulse which sometimes shoots to 110 and then I had to stop and focus on breathing. and by the time it was sunny which helped me completing that 1.5 km climb and reached the Kala Pathar Peak in 3 Hrs. The anticipation grew as with each step, I got closer and closer. You’ll be rewarded with an excellent view from where Majestic 360 degree view of Mt Everest range can be seen. Climbing and standing at an altitude of 5,625 meters is amazing, even with lower energy levels with all the pain disappearing. It’s like standing in the center of a wall of snow, where the magnificent snow-peaked mountains, the Khumbu icefall and the majestic presence of Everest come before you. Kala Pathar peak has huge, prayer flag covered rock where I tied drawing of my daughter. It’s something You will never forget.
Kala-Pathar was the point from where I had to start my descent. Thanks to TransHimalaya dot in for making a nice trip of EBC for me.

While the trek to EBC is amazing, the Kala Patthar summit is even more breathtaking .. and quite an accomplishment! Getting to EBC is great, and it’s so fun to stand directly below earth’s highest point, however, getting to the top of Kala Patthar leads to stunning views of some of the highest mountains in the world and the closest view you’ll ever get of Mt. Everest. Also, the view of Pumori is quite impressive as you trek up the mountain. I can’t wait to go back someday!

Photos's won't do it justice- great views of the sun setting/ or rising on Everest. We did it in the evening and were so glad we didn't get up at 4am to climb it- we got back down just as head torches were required. We didn't stay around at the top as the wind was crazy and I could barely keep myself upright- and pretty much ran down as quickly as I could- took a good few hours before I could feel my fingers and toes- I was so grateful for the poles and it helped in the wind, and meant I could descend at speed. If you go in the morning it'll be a very early start and you'll be climbing in the dark. It was -18 before factoring in the 30mph winds!! The wind surprised us as during the day it had been lovely.

Whilst these treks are always advertised as being to Everest Base Camp, the real highlight is going to the top of Kala Patthar for the views from the highest point you will reach on the trek.
We did it in the morning, and it was hard work. I wanted to stop a number of times, but made it to the top. By far the best views of Everest that we got on the whole trek.
Some in our group did stop part way up, and the views are still good from there. I would certainly recommend going at least part way up.
You go to EBC as it is the stated objective of the trek (and is actually worth it anyway), but Kala Patthar is the real highlight. Don't miss it.

After visiting EBCthe day before & not being able to see Everest, we hiked here early morning to get the views of Everest. Spectacular scenery surrounded by snowing peaks.
Other groups had hiked for sunrise in minus 18 C temperatures & their water had frozen. We were glad we waited for sunrise before we set off!

Did this in March 2015 and it was an effort and a half. You have to get up early if you want some nice clear skies and a good view of Mt Everest but it is well worth it. Beware though before the sunlight hits the ground it is freezing in the shadows, and oxygen is at around 50%, so; slowly, slowly.
