Trekking along the lower Mustang area between Jomsom Muktinath trek, Marpha and Tatopani will be passing by this beautiful gorge and nature. The trekking path is windy with beautiful scenery. A great motivation for trekkers with beautiful views. We had a wonderful and memorable time trekking despite the tiring journey!

I following that river many time on my trekking guide job for trekking in Annapurna regions.
Many peoples believe that to wash in the water here guarantees salvation after death. To the Buddhist it is the place that the great sage Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) meditated at, and to all, it is the source of fossilized ammonites, known locally as shaligrams that are found all along the upper reaches of the Kali Gandaki River valley. This trek is recommended year round as most of this trek is always in the rain shadow.

The Kali Gandaki river is the source of Shaligrams, which are believed to be the incarnations of Lord Vishnu and necessary to build any Vishnu temple. These are a special type of stone, some of which are fossils and they are shaped differently, believed to be different avatars of Lord Vishnu.

The Kali Gandaki River is a spectacular river which has many faces. The water is black/gray from clay particles. It rages through narrow gorges, carves deep into the rock, spreads wide, wipes out roads and bridges. Its unbelievable and makes driving along the river side dangerous and unpredictable.

You pass through this river on your way from Jomsom to Mukthinath. You can visit this river from Jomsom also. It is most revered river for Hindus and a Source for Shaligrams -a fossil of Stones. But revered asincarnation of Vishnu by Hindus. WE visited from Jomsom in search of Shaligrams and were lucky to find one.

The Kali Gandaki Gorge, also known as Andha Galchi, carves its way through the Himalayas in Nepal, following the course of the Kali Gandaki River. This awe-inspiring natural wonder has sparked debates regarding its depth, as the definition of gorge depth becomes elusive when considering varying rim heights. However, according to certain measurements, the Kali Gandaki Gorge stands as a contender for the title of the world's deepest gorge.

This river bed is HUGE. The sandstorms in the afternoon are fierce. With construction at a hectic pace, it feels like the trucks and the jeeps are always near the river bed either ferrying people or construction material. So at some places it feels like a work site. However, the fossils on the river bed are a reminder that this place was once the bottom of an ocean. Probably a delightful place to visit for a geologist.

We were trekking in March/April, and the river looked unimpressive. However, when you go a bit further past Chhusang the canyons are truly impressive. Unspoiled, and hard to enjoy without the necessary ups/downs.
