We hiked from Tansen to Rani Mahal (Ranighat) on one day in early April. We mostly took the routes which local farmers kept telling us to take at various places. We used the same route both ways, as we felt that would be the shortest. I am sorry, but I can't tell you where we walked.

It took us about 3 hours to hike down to Rani Mahal, and 4 hours to hike up to Tansen. I am not a hiker, and it was not easy to hike up for 4 hours, but I throughly enjoyed meeting the locals, seeing the small family farms, terraced farms, streams, waterfalls, narrow gorges, and finally, Rani Mahal, Kali Gandaki River, and a suspension bridge over it at our destination.

There are numerous houses that offer chai if you need to take a break, and very near Rani Mahal, there is a restaurant called, "Rani Mahal restaurant", of course. We ate a decent all-we-can-eat Dhal Bhat.

If it's a hot day, swimming at Kali Gandaki River is a good option, especially after a long hike.

Rani Mahal was getting renovated so there were lots of workers in the area. The building itself was clean and well maintained. There is nothing to see inside, really, but the view from the middle and top floors are nice.

If you come to Tansen, and if you have a whole day, you might want to hike to Rani Mahal. You might really enjoy it!

It is very nice to walk down to the palace, city view homestay provides good maps for this trip...the palace itself is not that impressive but it is very beautifully located at a river bank.

We had out driver take us half way down to the Palace but it was still a little bit of a hike from there. It is hard to comprehend that such a beautiful building just sits there on the edge of the river with no one residing in it! Not much to see other than the Palace but worth it for a half day trek.

From Tansen we drove by bike down the bumpy, unpaved path to Ranighat Palace. This path wasn't easy to drive, by times it was difficult. Once back in Tansen we heard most people fall with their bike here at least once... However, the palace to me had a mysterious atmosphere. It's empty, old, cracked in some parts but surrounded by lush vegetation and has a stunning view over the river. Don't expect a museum like place but simply breathe the atmosphere of this unique, historic place.

Either you go for a long hike to reach Ranimahal or you drive over there, even busses are running. The former king builded this palace for his whife after she passed away - nowadays a police station calles this place it's home. Completely in white, next to Khali Ghandaki the "Nepali Taj Mahal" is absolutely beautiful and worth a visit.
By the way: Opposite you'll find a place to stay overnight - sleep in cosy tents and have a beach party!

I have been planning to go to Ranighat and see Ranimahal and surrounding since long but was not possible due to time limitation. At that time, it was only possible to walk for at least 3 hours or so but now car can reach in about 30 minutes, which was great. Spend couple of hours and visited Rani Mahal (Queen's Palace) from each corner and loved it. The building has been recently renovated and painted so it looks beautiful. However sad to see that there was no one except two of us who was visiting at that point of time. I think, more promotion and increased facility to be well considered by local government and the tourist department. Ensuring regular public transportation, some shops and restaurants around will be really useful. This is such a beautiful place on the bank of Kali Gandaki and gives truly mesmerizing view. One can hire a car in Tansen and reach easily - avoid raining season since the road may be damaged.

A must to visit place and must be promoted widely.

This deserted old palace makes a great day trip from Tansen. A 3 hour walk largely downhill finds you by this impressive ruin right by the Kali Gandaki river. Terrific views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri as you go down through villages and lush forest. Harder coming back up but an exhilarating round trip.

We walked from Tansen via the path starting from the NE side of Shreenagar Hill. It went through beautiful forest and fields before connecting with the jeep track down to the Palace. We saw Langur monkeys in the jungle and lots of interesting birds. The Palace is in a bit of disrepair but they are working on renovating it. It is in a superb situation next to the Khali Gandaki River. There is a village along the way to get food and drink. We returned along the road which took us back to Tansen on the west side of the hill. The trip took about 8 hours with steady walking and not too many stops, apart from the dahl baht! It was great to be away from the dust and traffic fumes of the city.

I was in Tansen a few months before I finally got around to making the trek to Ranighat, but it is well worth the effort. The trek takes in some great views and really nice villages on the way (get a map from Get Up Palpa at City View Homestay), and the palace is in interesting if slightly strange place to visit. It seems to be permanently half-way through restoration, giving an odd contrast in the view. The gardens in the back are very atmospheric. The area to the front of the palace, with the stone beach going down to the river is a nice place to relax. So nice I chose it as the spot to propose to my girlfriend, which does make my review a little biased.

But a lovely days walking that you're not likely to regret for anyone.
