Include this on your walking tour of Bhaktapur. The walk from Durbar Square is interesting with many historic features to look at. There is a large water tank by the square, some beautiful wood carvings and of course the main and secondary temple. We did not have time to visit the wood carving museum also on the square. We enjoyed watching it all from the first floor of the square’s main cafe with it’s open balcony which served us good tea and coffee.

Went on a solo trip with my own guide and it was well worth it . Lots of repair going on since the 2015 earthquake and I can see from the pictures early posted that it’s moved on quite quickly . Well worth spending some time in a beautiful old city

Oldest temple in the city as well as an open museum. Various sized ad shapes of windows is my favorite. The most unique handcraft is the peacock window which is so details. Is the main landmark in Dattatraya square so you will not missed it.

This is the first temple we encountered on our way in Bhaktapur. The design is beautiful and the two statues up front give it a lot of charm.

Dattatraya in the Sanskrit language means the god formed by the combination of three powerful Hindu gods: Brahma the creator, Vishnu the protector and Shiva the destroyer. It is a three-storeyed temple. It is also the oldest temple in Bhaktapur dating back to 15th century.

Visited the Dattatreya temple , located at Bhaktapur Durbart on 2 January 2015.
Because of there's so many similar temples here , i have to match my pictures on those on the internet.
The three-story pagoda-style Dattatreya Temple, with statues of the Hindu trinity, was built by King Yaksha Malla in 1428.
Claimed that the building was constructed from a single piece of wood from one tree.
We cannot go inside , just admire the structure from outside.
The surrounding itself was lively with motorbikes passed by , souvenir shops , peoples and tourists roaming around , pigeons , dogs , goats etc.
Hopefully this structure survived the 25 April and 12 May 2015 earthquake.

At the entrance are two large sculptures of the Jaiput wrestlers, Jaimala and Pata (as in the Nyatapola Temple), a “Chakra”, and a gilded metal statue of Garuda, a bird-like divinity. Around the temple are wood carved panels with erotic decorations.

During the Mohani (Dashain) festival, in the Wane Layaku complex, which lies just southwest of the Dattatreya Temple, a rare Ghau-batacha (water clock) is displayed.

The Pujari Math, which houses the Woodcarving Museum and dates back to the early 15th century, is adorned with the intricately carved Peacock Window. The Chikanpha Math, across the street, houses the Brass and Bronze Museum, with its collection of ancient Malla housewares and ritual metalware.

In Dattatreya Square, lies a Pottery Square, where potters work and display their handicrafts

Took a public bus to get there, from Bhaktapur Bus Park, for 1.5 hrs ride.

Lot of school students and the bus driver can help you where to get off.

Only 25 to 40 rupees, if I am correct.

BTW, the square entrance ticket is a multiple days pass.

Do check out the alleys around this small town and that why I suggested to stay one night there to explore more, all the squares, sunrise and sun setting....... peaceful and spiritual!

Enjoy Enjoy!

We visited this temple because it is an ancient, undamaged temple that has beautiful energy if one wants to sit and meditate. The priest was very accommodating and the idol of Dattatreya is very special and powerful.
