On a cold January evening we enjoyed sitting on New Cafe Nyatapola’s balcony drinking tea and looking down on the square during the evening market and prayer/worship hours around 6-7pm. Listening to the drumming and bell ringing in the dark was magical. One temple is restored the other is still being rebuilt.

This is the main square upon entry to Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Entrance fee for foreigners is NPR 1,500 per person. The main attractions are the Golden Gate and Nyatapola Temple. Incredible woodcrafts and architecture. It is listed under the UNESCO World Heritage site at the Kathmandu Valley where the site is under the threat of earthquake especially in 2015. A precious heritage that worth a visit!

There was a market at the time when we visited so the place was full of people and vendors. It was lovely seeing those colorful fruits and other merchandise and people too. So glad we came across this place.

Wish we could have seen this pagoda temple before the earthquake. I am sure the 5 story temple was impressive. King Malla had it built in 1702 and dedicated to Siddhi Lakshmi. The Nyatapola Temple is the tallest in Nepal.
There was a smaller 3 story temple also associated with King Malla.

Wondered around the square for about 20 minutes and enjoyed the buildings as well as all the craziness around. We also enjoyed playing with the baby goats!

Without a doubt the highlight of the bhaktapur heritage tour. People queue up to get their photo taken at the historic steps. Worth just sitting there for a while and taking it all in.

We found a local student to show us around the square and the rest of the ancient city. This was the best money we could have spend without already having a tour guide. This square was full of life and culture on a beautiful fall Saturday!

...due to its bustling nature and thriving stalls, as well as the incredible buildings all around. It’s impressive now, before the earthquake it would have been utterly spectacular!

This is the place that I like most. In the middle of these heritage buildings, you will find a market busy with people. The colorful vegetables and fruits stalls contrast to the old buildings, makes the place really picturesque.
